We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Halem and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had been working as a barber in West Hollywood for a few years and honestly, the level of customer service that I saw from these shops was not very good. To me, when you’re in the service industry, customer service should be key. So I wanted to create a barber shop that was welcoming to all, friendly, gave off a neighborhood vibe and of course, gave great haircuts.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the proud owner of two barbershops, The Barber Den LA (West Hollywood) and Circa 33 Barbershop (Hollywood). I opened my first shop The Barber Den LA at the peak of lock-downs from Covid. When everyone was closing their businesses, I actually signed a lease in October of 2020. I had always wanted to open up a shop and I knew that this would be my opportunity to do so. We built out the shop from October of 2020 to January of 2021, when they finally allowed barbershops to re-open.

Opening during Covid was a struggle. I couldn’t find barbers to work and for the first 3 months, I worked by myself 7 days a week. Little by little, I added barbers as the shop became busier and busier. We are now fully-staffed and super busy.

I think the most important lesson I’ve learned from being in business now for 5 years is to not sweat the small stuff. I’m the type of person who wants everything perfect and I’ve learned over the years that not everything is going to go according to plan. So rather than try to control everything, it’s best to just go with the flow (wherever that takes you) and enjoy the ride.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was visiting for the week, I would definitely want to explore the city with them. I would take them to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, a movie at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and a drive along Mulholland.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this to my partner Gregory Enriquez, for putting up with the long hours I have to put in at the shop as well as having to deal with my sometimes cranky moods that come from running a business.
