We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Qin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work-life balance has definitely been a rollercoaster. I’m a workhorse by nature, and it feels a little unsettling to have downtime, especially when it feels like I have a million things to work on. Being pulled in a thousand directions is stressful, but I find myself motivated by it. I feel like the biggest thing I’ve learned over the last year or so is that balance is okay. It is okay to do nothing sometimes, to spend time with loved ones, and to take time for myself. I put so much of myself into my work, that it feels a bit strange not to work on anything, whether it’s writing or working on a film. The way I view this balance is that I need to take care of myself to properly do my job. Being with others can be rejuvenating as well, so it helps me find inspiration for my work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a writer by trade and then a director because I somehow stumbled into it. I think one of the things that set me apart from others is my work ethic and my drive. I can often be found staying up until 3-4am working on stories, or analyzing a script. I’m most excited for the upcoming 2023-2024 year, I have two big thesis projects that I’m working on and I’m looking forward to bringing those stories to life.

Getting to where I am right now was never easy, but it was worth it. All the late nights, the sacrifices, the lack of money, it’s all led me to where I am now. I’m so, so grateful, and I know this is just the beginning. I think the biggest thing that helped me get where I am has been my incredible support system. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my friends and family.

The biggest thing I want the world to know about me is that even though I’m young, I’m willing to put my all into my projects. I’m super open to collaboration and constructive criticism, and I’m excited to continue working in the entertainment industry and keep growing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots has to be Broad Street Oyster in Santa Monica. It’s got incredible food and is super close to a lot of the beaches. I’m a huge fan of LACMA too, and there’s always something interesting to see there. If they wanted a tattoo, I’d recommend Reservoir Tattoo Studios, but that’s where my recommendations stop. I’m super new to the city, so I haven’t had a chance to check out a lot of stuff. To be honest, I’m not a huge planner either so I’d definitely show them around Little Tokyo and Culver City, and see if there’s any trouble we can stumble into.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would be half the person I was if it wasn’t for my friends back home, Sarah, Danielle, and Kamryn. They’ve shaped me a lot as a person, but I would have to say the most influential people in my life have been my parents. They gave up a lot so I could be where I am today, and I don’t take that sacrifice for granted.
