We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Rondel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
In my first few years of owning The Caker, I struggled a lot with finding the work-life balance, which seemed to be ingrained in me as an entrepreneur to try and achieve. It wasn’t until year 5 that I actually gave up trying to find this elusive balance and all of a sudden I was much more content about not having it. I found myself at peace with the notion that if I wanted to work 90 hour weeks, I could and should. My friends and family would have to understand. I learnt that I work best to achieve my goals if I’m 100% all-in to my work, and to achieve necessary relaxation and peace, I needed to be 100% all-out. By this I mean, I discovered that if I felt a huge drive to work work work, there was no point in trying to compromise that, and I knew there would come a time eventually where I took a proper vacation and zoned out completely.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Caker might sound like it’s all about cakes, but it’s infinitely more than that.

Luxury bake-at-home cake kits, extravagant cakes for celebrity events, eye makeup, recipe books, cake suited for astronauts, baking masterclasses, and a metabakery are all part of The Caker’s offering, but it’s the undying brand loyalty to everything we do that truly sets it apart. The Caker is best described as a media company, with a cult-like following.

The Caker operates in the CPG, service, content creation and metaverse worlds all of which both nourish and feed off of each other thereby creating an ecosystem that is unique and enthralling.

I started baking cakes under the moniker “The Caker” in Auckland, New Zealand in 2010. My rise to being recognized as a baker who broke the typical mould happened super quickly, and before even renting my own premise, I had already contracted to write my first recipe book. Today I have five.

When being a one woman band was getting too much, my sister, Anouk, was serendipitously growing tired of how prescribed her trajectory as a finance lawyer was inevitably going to be and we joined forces. We spark entrepreneurial fireworks inside each other and we enhance each other’s skill sets – for me it’s being a creative leader and for Anouk it’s being a growth expert and operations manager.

Together we made the decision to expand operations from New Zealand into the USA, where now reside and are just at the start of the next chapter, still as bright eyed and bushy tailed as ever.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles has so much to offer, but seeing as food is my favorite thing in life, here are a few spots I would definitely base my days around:

Lolo – my go to wine bar with perfect Italian food
Gra – some of the best pizza in town
Honey Hi – my fave spot for a healthy lunch
Sushi Gen – the best sushi I’ve had in my entire life
Found Oyster – if you love seafood this is will be your heaven
El Prado – another natural wine bar that I love because you can sit outside on Sunset Blvd and absorb all the amazing energy
Gjusta – the best bread and pastries in LA
Musso and Frank – a very old steak house in Hollywood with amazing martinis

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Caker would not be anywhere close to where it is today without Anouk, my sister and co-owner of the business. Together we are like yin and yang, a force to be reckoned with. We make each other more powerful and support each other in the most pure way imaginable, because we have one common goal, which is to succeed.
