Meet Jordan Rumsey

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Rumsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I am a full time college student and so balancing my work on social media, as well as selling on platforms mixed in with school can be tough. I normally try to get all my schooling done during the day and then I have nights free to work on what I might post or editing content. Since I started social media, it has become more and more work, but I feel I am balancing out pretty well. School comes first and I graduate this May so then I can focus on creating content for a while.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Right before I went into my Freshman year of college, I decided to start a TikTok account and made my Instagram page public. My friends from high school knew I was against TikTok for the longest time, but I finally decided to bite the bullet and make an account. I had no idea what I was doing so I would ask some of my 80s friends for advice. I started out with just lip singing videos to 80s songs, and then I got into challenges and aesthetic videos. Somehow, I don’t know how, I gained a following. It just went up from there. I started getting so many amazing opportunities that I couldn’t pass up. There has been some ups and downs. I got bullied heavily when I was younger so cyberbullying didn’t really sting me as much. As they say, “in the 80’s they would just say it to your face”. And people just like to hide behind a screen so it is a bit laughable. Other than that, I have gained and I have lost some close friends who I thought I would never lose. That’s the toughest part. I want to believe everyone is a good person, but that is not always the case. It has been such a rollercoaster these few years and I hope to continue with my journey for a long time. I love all things 80s pop and pastels to the glam side of things. I know my audience started because of the preppy 80s style, and I hope that if I start incorporating other things I like, they can accept me for that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is tough because I unfortunately don’t live anywhere too close to anything but I definitely would say we would go to Marley Station Mall which is a ‘dead’ mall near my area. We would obviously go to the roller rink and go bowling. I would try to find some 80s shows that are playing either in DC or Baltimore that we could go to. Have a few movie nights and dance parties. VINTAGE SHOPPING!!! I normally go with the flow and find things as they come up. I wish there was more things 80s wise for me to participate in in my area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel like I am at an award ceremony, haha. I love this!
First I want to thank my family, for always being there for me and supporting me fully with my 80s lifestyle journey. Mom, Dad, Grace, Aunt and Uncles, Grandparents, Cousins, I love you all.
I want to thank my friends, from the ones who have been there since middle school before doing social media, to the ones who I have met along the way. Through the thick and thin, the ones who have stood beside me mean the world to me. Stephanie, Jay, Leah, Claire, Lynn, Hannah, Violet, Heather, Katie, Grace, and so many more, the list would be so long, but you know who you are.
Thank you to my manager Jenny, for helping me navigate through the up and downs and giving me amazing advice.
Everyone at MicHill Entertainment for believing in me. I love working with you and so many of the amazing people who are apart of it. Here’s to Small Town Outsiders!
Thank you to all the amazing Gen X’ers that follow me who have shared their stories with me. Your support and acceptance has made my journey so much better.
