We had the good fortune of connecting with Jori Viana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jori, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I think any success I have is attributed to the fact that I’ve always showed up 100% myself. Today in the social media world, it’s very tempting to see a successful artist mold and try to recreate that. Follow trends, do the catchy reels, paint what statistically sells the best. To an extent, I do believe it’s helpful to include elements of those strategies in everything you do. However, you should always be asking yourself, does this really reflect who I am? Am I twisting the trend enough, so it feels authentic to my own artistry? And in showing up every day, as the person I am, as opposed to what I think I should be, hopefully, my genuineness promotes a unique, interesting and talented person that individuals might be more curious to learn about.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m different from other artists due to the subject matter I’m attracted to painting. I love yummy desserts, silly animals and glamorous ladies who are usually paired together to evoke emotion or a narrative. My artwork makes people smile and laugh and they oftentimes are reminded of their own happy memories. I got to where I am today, because I made opportunities for myself. An artist’s path isn’t easy and it’s easy to feel like you’re wandering around aimlessly, but I made conscious efforts to create my business’ space, constantly promote myself, seek out an artistic community and education. None of it was easy and at times it felt pointless, but at the end of the day, I could never let go of being an artist. I’ve learned how to not do certain things and also, listen to people’s well intended advice, but know ultimately, that every path is different and do what feels good to you. I want the world to know that my studio is a space to rejoice in the silly and whimsical. That it’s an inclusive and loving space to lift up what makes people happy and that I’m there to support everyone’s dreams and potential, whether it’s through art or kind words.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think my shoutout should be dedicated to the Art Department at Viterbo University. It was there that I was immersed in all things art. My eyes were opened to new possibilities, thought processes and techniques that I would’ve never found on my own. There I was surrounded by people that valued art and the value of me pursuing a career in art. It nurtured who I was and gave me the tools to move forward with my creative journey.
