Meet Josephine Lee: Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josephine Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josephine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
ThePointeShop has evolved throughout its existence and became a life of its own.
It started as a dance boutique in 2011 similar to the shops I use to visit when I was growing up dancing. Then I started to recognize certain problems in the industry that were not being addressed (lack of expertise and variety in pointe shoe fitting).
In 2014, we took a chance in changing the business model and focusing down to just pointe shoe fittings.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In a world where every start up is trying to eliminate human resources and face-to-face interactions, we took a deeper dive into relationship building.
We created the first professional ballet shoe fitting company and developed a fitting method for ballerinas to keep them safer and in less pain. We continue this relationship throughout their careers as they grow and change.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Afternoon tea at the Huntington Library Drinks in Downtown LA’s Perch
Beach day at Santa Monica Pier
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the greatest lessons I learned in business is to find a team that makes up for your weaknesses.
Our entire staff has been nothing short of amazing but my manager, Melissa, in particular has been my saving grace. She quietly runs all operations and oversees every single one of our projects and decisions.
Working with me is like trying to jar a hurricane.
She is the anchor to my chaos. The epitome of reliability. And the converter of dreams to reality. She is a magician and I’m not sure where I would be without her.
