We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh DeAngelis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I feel like I recently I came to a very real conclusion about risk in my life. It goes without being said that without risk there’s no reward, but I now understand that you have truly do have to pay to play.
I told myself if I was going to be in debt, it would be from self-funding my projects and not from a car payment or a tuition, etc.
Although it may not be the most ideal situation, I realized it’s worth it for me to see my projects come to fruition.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a still photographer but now am delving into directing work of my own. I love to tell interesting stories visually. People and places that may be overlooked, forgotten, or just simply something that might make you curious or throw you for a loop.
I’m most excited to continue working on this project in the southern united states, that has been in the works since last year. It’s somewhat of a monograph about someones life who’s been through things most people couldn’t even fathom.
Biggest lesson is to never burn bridges. You never know when you’ll have to cross again.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d probably drive up to Piuma in Malibu, the sunset is crazy there. Los Feliz is a great place to walk around, get a bite to eat, shop and catch a movie. Spitz is an easy choice for me.
I’d be skateboarding somewhere downtown or koreatown.
The line hotel has a great poolside bar/restaurant.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A big shoutout to the bubble of people I met while working at Milk Studios. The list is too long to name individuals but they’ve opened new windows of opportunity and allowed me to share what I do with a solid community of creatives.
