We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Frieder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Josh, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Great question, Mike. I used to be a consultant in the healthcare technology field. I trained hospital staff on software systems in order to optimize workflow. If that sounds boring to you, then good – I thought so too. During the pandemic I decided to quit my job, start working part time gigs, and explore what made me happy. I found that I wanted to be professionally myself – goofy, imaginative, fun – and decided that filmmaking would be the path I pursue. Since then, I’ve produced and written many pieces that push my creativity and skills in ways that have allowed myself to grow.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art comes within relationships with people. When I write, I try to create stories that allow empathy to be developed though stories that are more familiar than they may seem – experiences that have throughlines in different peoples and cultures. When I produce, my job is to get my team of creatives to work together and see each other’s visions and perspectives. It’s a little like herding cats. Thick skin and patience are key. Filmmaking is fun, so I try to lead my projects from the perspective that everyone should enjoy this work. Otherwise, we may as well be sitting in an office.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nothing is better than walking around a neighborhood. I live in the East Hollywood neighborhood in Virgil Village, a wonderful place to take a stroll. Maybe we’d grab a beer and hang out on the sidewalk for a bit. That’d be nice. We could walk to the Bellevue park with my dog Frankie. He’s a good boy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It takes a village to support anyone and their pursuits and I’ve been blessed with a great village. My love for storytelling came from my grandfather and mother, my sense of humor from my father, and my drive from my sister. My good looks came on their own.

Shoutout to my ex that told me I wasn’t funny.
