Hi Josh, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I hail from Greensburg, Louisiana, a town known for its resilience and community spirit. My upbringing revolved around the church, where I was immersed in the world of music from a young age through participation in the youth choir. My fondness for funk and soul music blossomed alongside cherished moments shared with my father, who shared a deep appreciation for the genre. Midnight Star holds a special place in my heart as a testament to those formative years.

In my formative years, I had the privilege of marching in the St. Helena Central High School band, under the guidance of esteemed educators such as Mr. Willie Redfield, succeeded by Mr. Rodney Womack. It was within this environment that I acquired a fundamental understanding of musical composition and technique, knowledge that continues to serve me to this day. Inspired by my older brother, Sam Ross, who served as a section leader, I embarked on a journey of musical exploration that would ultimately shape my perspective and ignite a profound passion within me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a DJ and founder of Kxntry Brand (Country), I’ve embraced a philosophy that celebrates individuality and personal greatness. The decision to drop the vowel “ou” from “Country” and incorporate the “X” was intentional; it symbolizes the uniqueness and potential within each person, emphasizing that everyone possesses an “X factor” that sets them apart. This ethos is at the core of my brand, encouraging individuals to embrace and showcase their own “X factor” to the world.

For me, DJing has been a passion that dates back to 2012 when I first started experimenting with it as a hobby in my dorm room and in the country with my friends since young. Encouraged by friends and roommates who recognized my talent, I eventually took the leap into professional DJing in 2020, overcoming past fears and missed opportunities. I now advocate for pursuing one’s passions, especially when there’s a demand for it.

In addition to DJing, Kxntry Brand encompasses a clothing line and handcrafted jewelry. My inclination towards crafting, instilled by my mother, led me to create my own jewelry pieces, initially as a pastime. However, the positive reception and demand from others prompted me to monetize this hobby, providing not only a source of income but also a means of self-expression and connection within my community.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When exploring Louisiana, there’s no shortage of activities to indulge in, but one must arrive with an empty stomach. A quintessential day would begin at home immersed in the serene countryside, enveloped by the harmonious melodies of native birds and the untouched beauty of nature. Transitioning to Baton Rouge, a journey downtown would culminate in a leisurely crawfish feast atop the levee, soaking in the city’s vibrant energy.

No visit to Louisiana is complete without experiencing the cultural epicenter of New Orleans. From its pulsating nightlife to its rich history, the city offers an array of attractions to explore, even on a midweek excursion. As a devoted sports enthusiast, attending a Saints or Pelicans game would be a highlight, complemented by indulging in the diverse culinary landscape that defines Louisiana’s gastronomic scene.

Venturing beyond the urban sprawl, embracing the role of a food reviewer provides an immersive avenue to delve into the intricacies of Louisiana’s culinary heritage while delving into its vibrant culture. Boat tours offer an intimate glimpse into the state’s natural wonders, weaving together an unforgettable tapestry of experiences that encapsulate the essence of Louisiana living.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am immensely grateful for the unwavering support and influence of my family, whose natural musical talents have enriched my life beyond measure. My mother has been a guiding light in nurturing my creativity, while my father’s musical prowess has served as a constant source of inspiration, instilling in me a strong work ethic.

However, it is my brother to whom I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude. His creative ingenuity, musical passion, and entrepreneurial spirit have been a beacon of guidance and inspiration throughout my journey. Together, we uplift and motivate one another daily, and his presence in my life holds a significance that words cannot fully express. He is not only my sibling but also my mentor, confidant, and source of endless admiration.
