We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Montoya and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, what do you attribute your success to?
The most crucial aspect is prioritizing your team’s well-being. Ensure they’re well-compensated, share quality meals, and enjoy excellent wine together. Equally important to our brand’s success is treating every customer with genuine kindness and sourcing unique and well made products from all over the world.
What should our readers know about your business?
Owning and running a small business, especially in Los Angeles, is never a walk in the park. This industry is complex, with countless variables that are best understood through experience. Working for many years before starting my own business proved invaluable. The hidden fees, bills, expenses, and licenses can be overwhelming, and unforeseen challenges like pandemics can easily derail you if you’re not thoroughly prepared. Even with careful planning, sometimes it still feels like it’s not enough.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a heartfelt shoutout to LaRona Moore. As a childhood friend who believed in me and my vision for Vin on Rose, her support was instrumental. For 6–7 years before opening VOR, I had been working with Simon Mellor, managing and buying for Simon’s Market. When it was time to close Simon’s Market, I faced the challenge of finding funding to launch Vin on Rose, and LaRona stepped in to help bridge that gap. Nearly six years later, I couldn’t be prouder of our success. Sometimes, all it takes is someone willing to take a chance on you.
