We had the good fortune of connecting with Joyce Kahng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joyce, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The success of my brand, JOYCETHEDENTIST, comes from leaning into my strengths. For many years I sought to become a more well rounded person and improve in areas I was weak. In the last few years, I’ve defined my strengths and sought to develop those skills even further.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a cosmetic dentist and owner of a Orange and Magnolia Dental Studio in Costa Mesa. It is a boutique styled practice with a focus on quality, instead of volume, and I help people smile more confidently with smile makeovers that look natural and built with their facial structures in mind. Everything I do is custom made for the patient.

I became a dentist when I was 23 years old, so while I was book smart, the world didn’t necessarily welcome me as a Dentist who looked like she just graduated from high school. I learned to differentiate myself with my social media accounts where I leaned in on patient education and showcasing a side of myself that would help patients learn who I was. I learned that putting yourself out there is the only way that patients can find you and that pushing the bounds of comfort is an essential part of being a business owner.

I am now a part time content creator as my hobby, which has had an interesting synergistic effect for my practice. Because of social media, I have been able to reduce my marketing to $0 and I get all of my leads straight from social media.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely want for them to smell the ocean breeze and I love a good mimosa brunch. I would probably rent a duffy boat and have a picnic on the boat with some champagne, bagels, and lox.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I couldn’t be where I am without my husband. He is always figuratively opening the door for me to do what I want to do and is always by my side whenever I have another crazy idea. I believe the person you marry is one of the most important decisions you can make and had I married someone who was overbearing and controlling, it would be a much different story.
