We had the good fortune of connecting with Joyie Lai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joyie, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I am still in the midst of figuring out my work life balance. But I can say that I’m getting better at it. I’d learnt to be patience with myself and give myself breaks when I need. I’ve never seen the importance of work life balance before as I’d always enjoy what I’m doing. I often find myself telling myself “I’ll just edit these drums and then I’ll go to sleep” and the next thing it’s already 4am in the morning and I’m still working on the mix. I remember someone once told me “if you don’t take time for your health, you’ll end up needing to take time for your illness.”

I think work life balance it’s really important and taking time off work for yourself doesn’t mean that you’re slacking. Sometimes taking time off from music and just go out with friends or go on a hike could be really refreshing. I find taking breaks like these helps refresh my creative mind and ears.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m still in the journey to discovering my artistry. But my current main focus right now is to be a mix engineer and a producer. I think my passion is to make music sound good. Regardless of composing, playing, recording or mixing. These past months I find myself busy in the studios mostly recording and mixing. Even tho engineering do takes up a lot of my time. I still enjoy playing my guitar and writing some music here and there.

I just finish my degree in Music Production and Engineering at Berklee and I’m really excited to be in LA. I’m looking forward to meet with new people and work with new artist. I really enjoy working with different artist as I always find every artist really inspiring to work on different genres. I believe every person is a unique individual and not just in their music but as a human being they all inspires me in different ways to expand my creative and artistry.

I think challenges in life are there to help us grow to be a stronger and wiser person. It’s never an easy road. One of my biggest challenge here is that coming from a small country, Malaysia, my parents have to sacrifice a lot for me to be here. It’s not easy to be halfway across the globe away from family. But I’m glad that they have always been supportive of my career. I am also very thankful for the friends I have around me that had been my comfort in times of stress.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m still new to LA, so I’m also in the midst of exploring all the cool places around. But if my friends are visiting the area, I definitely would take them for a hike as there are many beautiful scenery in LA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I first people that I would like to shout out to are my parents as they had been my biggest supporters throughout my music journey. They sacrificed a lot just for me to come here in the US. It’s really not easy for them but they still allow me to pursue my passion for music.

Another thing that I find it really important in life is to have a healthy environment. Most people that I’d been working with now had been really inspiring. I’m really grateful for my friends that pushes me to take on new challenges everyday to be a better person and musician.
