We had the good fortune of connecting with Judy Liang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Judy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I learned to risk take by “begin with the end in mind.” I learned this in the book 7 habits of highly effective people by Stephen Covey. That book changed my life. I choose to act, speak, and be from the end person that I see myself to be. A person who encourages others to find their voice and dare to live out their truth. That is what I’ve done in my business. I often ask my client deep questions about their life to find a true connection with them. It’s a risk because some people may find it too personal but I never see my client as a transaction but rather a relationship that is meant to change each other for the better. I always tell my client the truth about which permanent makeup procedure to do or NOT to do even if it’s not the best move for my “bottom line.” I think the risks I take to be vulnerable with the people that have come through my path has really worked out for me. I learn something new from each of them and it has really made my business so much more meaningful and fulfilling to my soul.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a permanent makeup artist. I tattoo people’s faces for a living. It is not a job to take lightly since a tattoo can potentially last forever. I see my business as really an extension of me. Every set of brows I create comes through from my mind, heart, and out through my hands. The shape, color, and saturation are customized only for that 1 client. It is curated intricately by the stories they share with me. I want them to feel so beautiful, confident, and effortlessly striking when they leave my salon. I got to where I am today but believing in myself and listening to my inner guidance system. You can call it the source, God, inner being, or soul. I can feel in my gut that there is a force within that pulls me to the next great adventure and expansion of myself. It’s not always easy because our rational mind likes to weigh all the pros/cons or profit/expense. But at the end of the day, I want to leave this earth knowing I contributed to our society the best way I know/can. I want the world to know building a business with conscience and soul can also be super profitable. We don’t have to choose either-or. A world in which a person feels hustled should end. Integrity needs to make a strong comeback.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m blessed to live in the heart of outstanding Asian foods and I love to eat. Here it goes. 1) Four sea restaurant for traditional Chinese breakfast. 2) Boba at bopomofo 3) Lunch at Savoy Kitchen 4) Picnic at Lacey Park 5) Boba at Tea Station 6) Dinner at Bistro Na’s The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think one author that I must shout out to is Brene Brown. I’ve read almost all of her books. She has helped me to understand how to be more empathetic and compassionate towards others and myself. This year was tough for a small business like me but the mind shift her book has created in me makes me feel invincible. My pain, truth, walk of life so far is who I am. I am so much more unapologetically myself and am experiencing the state of un*uckwithable.
