Meet Julia Rabinowitsch | Founder, The Millennial Decorator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Rabinowitsch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Since I was little, I was always super intrigued by physical spaces. Instead of playing with a dollhouse, I would literally design my own out of empty tissue boxes. So for me, design has always been a presence I grew up with whether it was physical, within my artwork, or in graphic design work.
The thought process behind starting The Millennial Decorator really came from me wanting to share my love for the home and affordable products. I had many friends come over and wonder at how ages 23.24,25 I was making my home look beautiful with really a minimal salary. I started TMD in the summer of 2020 as a creative outlet during a dark time for us all. Eventually, TMD evolved into limited item-themed drops, collaborations, and more. Today, I have a wonderful community of followers all driven by design, but perhaps like me are all on a budget and want nice quality vintage decor.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my brand with nothing. There was never even an intent to make it to what it is today which has taught me many things. It’s never too early or too late to start something- as long as you have an idea and some passion, that’s all that counts.
I never grew up with tons of connections that brought me where I am today- I simply worked hard and let my creativity and passion shine through which is what I think really allows me to stand out within my work for TMD. I am super passionate about working with others which I have turned into expansive partnerships with companies such as Reformation Vintage. I am super passionate about design, which has garnered a following of individuals who are also driven by design and who I am allowed to have great dialogues with, share my passions with, and more. I’m passionate about working with and highlighting minority creators which has translated into me creating educational guides around black designers, eco-friendly products, and so much more.
As long as you have passion and true intent, I believe you can do anything.
I have learned many things along the way- that hard work will set you apart. True creativity and originality will let you shine. And embracing your uniqueness versus trying to walk in someone else’s path can be your ultimate demise. I have learned to trust myself, my ideas, and that building a brand takes hard work, determination, and an unshakable attitude.
I want the world to know that I hope to see The Millennial Decorator continue growing. I hope to continue garnering an incredible community that’s driven by design, and I hope to give back! I have many ideas for all of the above so I cant wait to continue sharing and working on all the things I’d like to see TMD grow into.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is my home. It’s where I was born and raised. What I realized in my adult life, is that LA is continuously evolving. Now, areas that I NEVER stepped foot in growing up are completely gentrified and draw in friends from all walks of life to stay in and visit.
When a friend visits, I usually take them to the similar areas I grew up in- Malibu Country Mart, The Grove, hikes in Beverly Hills, etc. For eats, I’ll go to Guisados Tacos in WeHo or Panini Kabob Grill in Century City probably any day… I know.. fancy. And a MUST hit for any friend visiting is Sushi Fumi. Ask me to go there any night of the week and I probably will. Best sushi in LA hands down.
I also love the architectural staples of LA which I kind of find to be a hidden gem. Not many visitors really realize how many architecturally significant homes are here from the walks of Neutra to Frank Lloyd Wright and more. I had a friend come from Canada and we actually went on a mini-tour of about 5-6 of these architecturally significant homes and I absolutely loved it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom! She always had a great eye for design and decorated a beautiful home which I appreciate to this day and is also why I think I had a strong eye and love for design from day one.
