We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Schoen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Italy and grew up in New Orleans. Every year, we would return to Italy and spend the summer with my Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. They lived in a tiny town full of farmers, and back then, the population was pretty small. My Grandpa ran a farm and I would spend every waking hour outside. In front of the house was a huge field full of cherry trees and wildflowers, on the side of the house was a creek with a majestic Magnolia tree that provided shade, and behind the house was the orchard. He grew everything imaginable and I would help him harvest whatever was ready in the morning and then spend the afternoon with my Nonna preparing and cooking the food. When I think about luxury, I don’t think about designer bags or jewelry, I imagine the richness and joy that I felt being so connected to the land when I was a kid. Glacce’s tagline for a long time was Luxury Spiritual, which to us encapsulated the definition: when great pleasure on the material plane meets the health of the human spirit. This is what I felt growing up, a great pleasure on the material plane that fed my spirit. Nothing fancy, nothing extravagant, just the connection with nature and the appreciation of moving through time while learning from the people I love. Glacce is a vehicle for our philosophies, and we use the brand to express the things that mean most to us.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Glacce has been a labor of love from day one. Sharon and I grew up in New Orleans and my father would always make us crystal elixirs, potions, and initiated us into the world of energy. I think what is unique about our business is that it really was built around this idea that captivated us; we saw the vision, and we just wanted to share this product. At the beginning it was easy in a very specific way. We worked hard, we poured our energy into it, and we saw the fruits of our labor come back tenfold. We had the right idea at the right time and we were able to achieve levels of success that I could have never imagined.
The main lesson that I’ve taken away from my 7 years with this business is that timing is everything. We’ve been blessed and cursed by timing. From orders getting held up in customs to the right PO coming in at the right time, opportunities, people, problems, and blessings have all felt like part of some plan that I wasn’t clued in on. With the perspective I have now, I see that it was all to teach me certain lessons. Would I change anything? No. Because I’m so prepared for the new challenges coming my way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in New Orleans, there are so many worm holes you can get sucked into in the city. First of all, I would tell my friend to visit in the spring…February – May that way we could go to a crawfish boil, one of my favorite NOLA traditions. In no particular order, I would take them to dinners at N7, Bar Brine, and my mom’s backyard. I would take them to drinks at Hotel St. Vincent. Barrel Proof, and Manolito. We’d get coffee at Pond and breakfast at Molly’s Rise and Shine. We’d go to City Park and explore the Couturie Forrest trail and the Sculpture Garden. And I wouldn’t let them leave without watching a sunset on Bayou St John.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my Co-Founder Sharon! We have been best friends since we were in Kindergarten. She came up with the idea for Glacce and invited me to be a part of it. I have learned more from running this business that I could have ever imagined, and none of it would have happened without her. She has taught me how to be brave, bold, loving, patient, and to never settle for less. We’ve been through the most tremendous ups and downs together, and I am constantly impressed by how willing she is to confront herself, make changes, and course correct. I am proud of her and how far she has come and I really couldn’t imagine doing this with anyone else!
