We had the good fortune of connecting with Julian Camarena and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julian, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always wanted to be my own boss, and I’ve always wanted to make a living doing something I love. The only way to do those two things is to start and run your own business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer, songwriter, musician and music producer. I absolutely enjoy every aspect of the music creation process. I feel that what sets me apart from others is my unique combination of experiences. My father being a painter I grew up around art and even considered pursuing a career as a painter myself before I fell completely in love with music. There are many crossovers between painting and music, such as creating contrast and a focal point. I believe starting out as a painter made me an overall better musician. Also although I currently focus on pop music, I started out playing jazz. I developed a good ear for melodies and improvisation as a result, which has been a huge advantage in terms of writing and producing songs. Honestly now with having over 5 million followers on social media and millions of streams on my music, looking back I realize what a journey and challenge it really has been to get to this point. It definitely was not easy getting to where I am today, its been a long process and I still am continuously learning every single day. It’s really just been about taking each challenge one at a time and keep moving forward every single day. Eventually everything adds up and you can look back on everything that you’ve accomplished. Some of the most important lessons I learned were first you need to sometimes be patient when it comes to the end results, but always need to be impatient when it comes to learning and improving your skill set. It’s also very important to never get too comfortable so that you can always keep moving forward. Complacency is your worst enemy. In terms of what I would love the world to know about me and my brand/story is that I’ve always kept and will always keep every bit of art I create authentic . Each song I write is unapologetically me. I always tell people the best way to truly get to know me is to listen to my music, because that is where my story is and that is where I will continue to tell my story.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The itinerary would start off where every good adventure should start, with a good cup of coffee. One of my favorite places in Los Angeles is a place called Regent coffee in Glendale. They have one of the best cappuccinos. Then some good outdoor fun so either to the beach or hiking like Runyon Canyon. In terms of restaurants I love Chinese food and Mexican food. China town has some great restaurants that I love to visit. In terms of Mexican food there is this taco place in Burbank called Guisados that has amazing tacos! Lastly you can’t not visit Los Angeles without seeing a Lakers game. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family, they have been my team and support from day one and have stuck with me through every high and every low. I’ve been working side by side with my brother, cinematographer and senior VFX artist, Tarin Camarena since day one. Along the way my other brother, director and screenwriter, Adrian Camarena & my cousin photographer, Anthony Camarena joined the team and have helped build a strong foundation for our business. Lastly my parents, especially my father, world renowned painter, Miguel Camarena has been the creative foundation and support since I first decided to pursue my own career as an artist and my mom has and will always be my number one fan.
