We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
To me, pursuing an artistic career has been more of an experiment than anything. I always was of the mentality that I’ll try it out until it no longer fits, and even though the fit has changed, it’s still where I feel most at home.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In my career, the hats I’ve tried on include: dancer, choreographer, videographer, creative director, teacher… and that just covers the labels of the arts section. I love jumping around within those titles– each time I step into one label it inspires me to do better in the others.

I think it’s never an “easy” thing to have a career as an artist- especially now in the digital age. The world seems to be oversaturated, and the best thing I’ve learned is to keep my head down and focus on my own self.

I’m really excited about just continuing to grow. This past summer has been really pivotal for me, and I’m ready to carry that energy forward.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest, I still need someone to show me what to see… but I adore Sage Bistro (it’s this amazing vegan restaurant), and really any of the beaches. I also love finding new hiking trails… but I am definitely not the best California tour guide (hehe).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My shoutout has to go to my community- my peers that are down to let me experiment on them, and those a few steps ahead of me who have allowed me to practice my craft in their spaces. I have been fortunate enough to re-locate through 3 cities within my career, and each city has brought new mentors who have added advice to my path that changed it deeply.

Truly when I think about it, I can’t credit what I do to just one person– it’s really been a communal experience.

One thing that really resonates with me is that I owe my family a whole lot. They have supported me through my career thus far and are always a few steps ahead of me making sure I’m safe and cared for. That means a whole lot to me– so I definitely wanted to shout that out!
