We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Yeo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, why did you pursue a creative career?
There wasn’t ever going to be anything else for me; it has always been art, and it will always be art. When I was younger I played around with the idea of becoming an investigative coroner or a therapist if being an artist didn’t work out for me.
But now I think I would just find a different way to be part of the arts. I get to empathize and communicate with people in a way that I don’t find anywhere else but is integral to what I most value about myself and what brings me the deepest joy in life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My creative impulses have always stemmed from the mining of my biography and reflecting on my internal visual world. The emotional veil that filters what makes our experiences feel true is what I prioritize within my practice. Coming out of a decade-long, PTSD-induced dissociative amnesia, I find myself in a state of “buffering,” waiting for my body to reconnect with its spirit. To heal my body and make it a welcoming and, potentially, familiar environment to lure my spirit back – I celebrate my creative impulses. In my interdisciplinary practice, I use various mediums to explore the connection between mind and body through the focus of personal, objective, concrete, and fabricated truths.

Currently, I am exploring ceramics to make vessels of various self portraits for my spirit to visit. Similar to how when we go to the closet every morning, we choose the outfit that best represents who we are that day. My intention is for my spirit to familiarize herself with all the different faces that belong to her. This exercise has helped me develop a new body of work that I will be pursuing these year where I will be continuing with ceramics – but also bringing in other materials such as pipes, stained glass, plants, etc.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Learn archery with the Pasadena Roving Archers, make our own sodas at Galco’s, and do some reading at Tea at Shiloh.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my parents who worked so hard through every kind of challenges to ensure that their children would never consider to compromise on their dreams and passions. Every good I have in my life is because of you, thank you for the privilege of loving parents.
