We had the good fortune of connecting with Julieta Gerlein and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julieta, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
The extent of a person’s courage determines their size.
I was still very young when I had the opportunity to read this thought in a book, and it questioned me and stuck with me. That phrase forever marked me with the term of having to dare, and that is where one of the principles of success lies because many times there are external things that want to hold us back and even force us to abandon our dreams. But that daring is the action that bends and conquers fear. The act of courage consists of arming yourself with the strength to conquer one’s inner self and, consequently, go out and accomplish one’s dreams. I remember when years ago I envisioned starting the dream of being able to serve people through the art of acting, and it was then that I began to dare.
First to believe that it was possible for me to study at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, one of the most renowned acting academies in the United States, and to know that this goal involved the challenge of leaving the comfort of my home and the closeness of my family, moving from my country Colombia, to the big city of Los Angeles.
I knew that life was going to reward me by giving me great friends and the chance to meet special beings, finding in Los Angeles those Angels who would make my path better and more pleasant.
I knew that by daring, God would reward me and give me the strength to face so many new things. I had to learn a new language, a new culture, a countless number of new things, including standing up for myself. But I discovered that when there is a big dream, that same dream becomes a great ally that gives you the necessary strength to dare.
And as the years pass, I reflect and am grateful that I overcame my doubts and anxieties in addition to having the courage to pursue my aspirations. Now that I have ascended this hill, I can see magnificent mountains in the distance. I am aware that there will be obstacles to overcome, new avenues to explore, and objectives to fulfill.
Remember that you will be the size of what you dare to do, and your dreams will be your best ally to conquer great heights.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve learned a lot of great lessons that would stick in my mind forever.
What I learned is that if you are humble and learn to understand that there are giants around you, giants like the actors and actresses who have walked the path to success and left footprints that you can follow, giants like my teachers who wholeheartedly transmitted that love and passion for such a beautiful vocation as the art of acting.
Giants, just like each of my classmates and friends from my career.
And so I learned that if you are humble and see only giants around you, the only thing you should do is climb on their shoulders to become great.
Also understanding that success is the progressive realization of a dream, this clarifies and fills one with tranquility knowing that success is not a destination but a journey. By understanding this, it gives us peace of mind to value and enjoy each step taken towards our dreams. In that walk towards those dreams, you equip yourself with a backpack full of tools that are habits. Habits to enjoy that journey, habits like having a clear dream, habits like discipline and perseverance, resilience for when you stumble and have to get back up, and gratitude becomes a refreshing bottle of water that will help calm your fatigue and recharge your strength to keep enjoying and reaching great mountains.
But of all those tools, the most important one is faith, which is like handing over the compass of your north to God so that He may guide your walk through this life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA has it all! I’ll take them to the beautiful beaches, the best hiking spots with the most incredibly views of the city and I’d make them walk so much because every corner of the city is magical.
The possibilities and endless in the City of Stars, they would never get bored.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Nothing would be possible without my family and all the support they have gave me. They have always been my main source of inspiration and encouragement, and without them, I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am now. It’s never easy to move to a new country where everything is unfamiliar. It has many difficulties, unknowns, and periods of uncertainty. However, my family has always stood by my side, no matter what. My teachers, friends, and partner have all had a huge role in my work. No matter how hard things get, their unwavering support has given me the willpower and inspiration to keep moving forward.
