Meet Julio Cesar

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julio Cesar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julio, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want my legacy to be one of passion, discipline, and impact. I hope to be remembered not just as a skilled dancer, but as someone who brought emotion, energy, and authenticity to every performance. I want people to look back and say that I inspired others—especially those from underrepresented communities—to believe in their talent, push past their limits, and express their stories through movement. My goal is to leave a mark on the industry by elevating Latin dance on international stages and contributing to performances that made people feel something real. More than anything, I want to be remembered as an artist who danced with heart, lifted others up, and never stopped growing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always set high expectations for myself and put in the work to achieve them. Taking the risk to move to a different part of the world while staying true to my roots was one of the biggest challenges of my life. Becoming the first Mexican dancer to teach a reggaeton class at Millennium Dance Complex and opening the door for others to follow was a leap of faith—like jumping off a cliff and learning how to fly on the way down.
It wasn’t easy at all. I come from a middle-class family, and money wasn’t something I could just ask my mom for whenever I needed it. That taught me to value every opportunity and make the most of every space where I could grow and learn.
What I want the world to know is that I’m here to be timeless—not just remembered for what I did, but for how I made people feel through my presence, my movement, and my actions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always plan a day that shows off the city’s best mix of energy, culture, and beauty. We’d start with a morning hike up to Griffith Observatory for some fresh air and iconic views, followed by coffee at a local favorite like Go Get Em Tiger. For lunch, I’d take them downtown to Grand Central Market for a taste of LA’s diverse food scene—Eggslut and Tacos Tumbras a Tomas never disappoint.
In the afternoon, we’d head west to soak up the sun at Santa Monica and Venice Beach, maybe rent bikes along the boardwalk or explore the shops on Abbot Kinney. If time allows, I love driving out to El Matador Beach in Malibu for the sunset—it’s peaceful and cinematic. We’d wrap up the day with dinner at Malibu Farm or somewhere vibey back in West Hollywood, like Harriet’s Rooftop. It’s all about showing the side of LA that feels inspiring, creative, and alive.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to mention a few people who truly changed my perspective as a dancer.
The first is Julius, my first Horton contemporary teacher from New York. I had the privilege of learning from him at the beginning of my journey, at my first dance studio in Mexico City. The way he shared his passion for movement created a shift in everyone in the room. His energy and presence made me want to become a teacher one day—to inspire others the way he inspired me.
The second is Miguel Antonio from Chicago, whom I met in Los Angeles. The structure of his class, his sense of timing and rhythm, and—most importantly—his storytelling through movement deeply impacted how I dance. His ability to combine choreography with music in such a meaningful way sparked something in me, and soon after, I began choreographing myself.
Last but not least, Brandon Dumlao from the Bay Area, whom I also met in LA. To me, he is the definition of a dancer. Brandon can do it all—any style, any genre—and when he dances, it just makes sense. Everything is clean, clear, and powerful. When I started training under him, my confidence as a dancer grew immensely thanks to his guidance. Years later, I was fortunate enough to collaborate with him in multiple classes, which was an honor and a full-circle moment in my journey.
