Meet Jun Kuang | Filmmaker & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jun Kuang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jun, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
This is an excellent question. Because I’m the types of person who rely on my instinct to work and to live. If you ask me what makes me happy, I guess the answer is stories. I’m a storyteller, and I’m also a good story listener. I’ll always be at my happiest when I have a story I’m dying to tell, and I’ll be at my happiest when I’m listening to a good story. I’m a filmmaker and I’m a writer. I write all the time, and I use my camera to tell other people’s stories. I laugh with it and I cry with it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As I said earlier, I’m a filmmaker. I write a lot and I film a lot. I currently own a Los Angeles-based video production company JM 16, and I’m prepping a feature film.
Everything can chase back to a summer night in 2007. I was a sophomore in college. We had a 4 hours class called Film Aesthetics. It is at that night, my professor showed us “The Grapes of Wrath”, a John Ford classic which was released in 1937. The film blew me away, it is that night I told myself that I have to be a filmmaker.
It was never easy to establish a business in LA. English is not my native language, but I worked my butt off to make sure I speak and write like native English speakers. I face challenges every day in my line of work, there is never an easy day, there is always some sort of challenge. I just have to tell myself and my colleagues that remember why we are here, remember why we want to start and be creative. We don’t stop until we finish what we started.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, it’s really hard to answer this question because there are so many wonderful spots I can show my friends, almost too many. If I can arrange a week-long trip for my friends, I would take them to big bear to ski, go to Newport for whale watching, go to West Hollywood clubs, hike in Griffith Park, enjoy a great sunset view in the Getty, and enjoy some authentic Chinese food in San Gabriel Valley.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The answer is my family. My parents have been supporting me since I was a kid, and my wife encourages me to do whatever I want to achieve my goals since we have met.
Of course, I won’t be here if I haven’t watched masterpieces from the one, the only, and the great John Ford.
