We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Gilbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My decision to launch my own business came about very organically. Due to COVID, I lost my job, which left me with a lot more free time. I began creating Tiktok videos of my father’s sports card collection as nothing more than a hobby. People continued to tell me how much they enjoy watching the videos I post as the account began to pick up followers. As the account grew, it become more and more enjoyable to share in the success of the account with my Dad. On Tiktok, JGilbyCards currently has over 32K followers. To grow a community, I learned and taught myself how to post on social media and create videos. I knew I could establish more social media accounts because I was able to grow one already. I next began going around my area and offering small businesses my social media services. That is how my business started.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Managing other people’s small businesses on social media is incredibly fulfilling. Making videos showcasing other people’s items, observing their happiness and pleasure as a result of the increased internet engagement they begin to experience is my favorite part of what I do. Growing on social media takes time and consistency, The biggest issue with being a social media manager is that everyone thinks they can do it—creating posts and videos that are interesting to watch. I often remind prospective clients that nothing will happen overnight but as time goes you will see improvement. Knowing how to make things visually appealing and what causes videos or posts to go viral is where I shine creatively.
