We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaamilah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaamilah, what do you want people to remember about you?
I wish to leave a meaningful legacy of perseverance, resilience and integrity. I hope that my story as well as my creative, social and commercial contributions during my lifetime will make a lasting impression and positive impact on my community. I want others to remember how I treated them and how I added value to their lives. Through my professional accomplishments, my goal is for my name to be associated with making the world a better place for underrepresented groups. I plan to achieve this by fostering group economics, building generational wealth, promoting financial literacy and overall, giving Black people the necessary tools to pursue career paths and educational opportunities that they would stereotypically not enter, due to lack of resources, infrastructure and support. Ultimately, I believe this legacy accurately reflects who I am, what I stand for, and will pave the way for a future generation of independent thinkers who are inspired to be the best version of themselves.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, then moved to Pennsylvania where I received my BS in Finance. I always knew that I wanted to go to graduate school, so shortly after completing undergrad, I moved out to California where I pursued a specialized Masters program in Finance as well as a Masters in Business program. During this time frame, I was running a fashion blog and doing freelance research work for a law firm. Currently, I work at an asset management firm and I still create social media content online.

Pursuing higher education and landing a position in high-level finance was an uphill battle for me to say the least. My journey in achieving my accomplishments in life thus far were filled with many late nights, rejections, anxiety, stress and tears. Moving across the country, deciding on a major, navigating living on my own, performing well academically, figuring out my calling in my career, developing my skills and getting through the intense job application/interview process were only some of the myriad of challenges I faced. However, after reflecting back on it all, I’ve realized that everything that has happened in my life happened at the right time for me. Although my journey was uphill, I’ve learned that the best view comes after the hardest climb.

I chose grad school because I felt it would set me up to create an impact, excel in my career and become financially free. I enjoy reading about current events happening in the financial world and I am interested in learning about the strategies, partnerships and deals that businesses implement in order to successfully operate. The language of business challenges me to think critically and develop team building as well as leadership skills.

My value-add is my strong communication and analytical skills, attention to detail and overall ability to work remotely, with little direction, under time constraints. In business school, you often write research papers, read case studies, create presentations and/or work on projects that involve analyzing a company and providing recommendations for that company. I believe that I excel at writing and research, specifically in a way that is clear, concise and consistent. I’m able to break down high level concepts into layman’s terms. I also have a creative side to me that enjoys graphic design, social media marketing and creating visual content online. These right and left-brained traits enable me to create dynamic, engaging and informative reports and assignments in school and perform well academically overall.

In terms of being a blogger and content creator, I initially created my Instagram as part of the Style Guru internship program with a media company called College Fashionista. Essentially it was my duty to take photos and write articles that captured fashion, trends, and the latest happenings on my college campus. I had so much fun creating this content, and my peers loved it too. My classmates would always compliment my style and ask me for advice on how to put pieces together. This internship was what sparked my interest in blogging and the world of fashion and content creation. As much as I loved being behind the camera, I also wanted to be in front of it. Instead of sharing the styles of others, I wanted to showcase my own personal style, which is why I decided to launch my blog. I have an analytical and creative side to me. Blogging helped me to embrace both. Creating content served as an outlet that enabled me to truly showcase who I am and what I’m passionate about. The rest is history.

The mission of my blog and brand, Style Prose, is to inspire, educate, and motivate others by providing authentic insights on fashion, finance, and fitness. Think of Style Prose as a personal blog that covers business, style, health and lifestyle topics for millennials. My hope for you is that upon visiting my blog, you will feel inspired, learn something new, and ultimately, be motivated to become the best version of yourself.

For those who are currently young professionals, in grad school, navigating the unknown, or just dealing with the ups and downs of life, here is my advice to you:

At the end of the day, all you can do is your best, and the rest will fall into place. The life you want is right there in front of you, all you have to do is go after it. When you go after it, people and situations will either be on your side, by your side, or in the way. How you choose to react to those people and situations will determine your level of happiness between where you are and where you want to be. There is power in timing, patience, resilience and perseverance.

During those trying times when nothing is going your way, everyone and everything is irritating you, and all you want to do is complain, it is imperative to pick a piece of good news and hold onto it. Think about one good thing: something good that happened to you, something good that brings you happiness, someone good who has unconditional love and support for you, etc. and focus your energy on that.

Last two pieces of advice: 1) don’t sweat the small stuff and 2) compete with yourself, not others.

At the end of the day, we’re all just trying to figure it out. I hope that my story helps you realize that you are not alone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I consider myself to be a coffee aficionado and fitness enthusiast, so the first item on our itinerary would be to grab delicious coffee at local coffee shops such as Verve, Neighborhood LA and Blue Bottle. Our caffeine fix would be followed by taking in beautiful, sweeping views of the city during a hike at Runyon Canyon, Griffith Observatory, The Greystone Mansion and Laurel Canyon. Next, we would go for a nice drive down Pacific Coast Highway towards Malibu to check out the art at the Getty Villa. For shopping, we would visit the Westfield Century City mall and of course, The Grove. Our major food stops would include breakfast at Republique, brunch at The Beverly Hills Hotel, lunch at The Ivy, burgers at Hiho Cheeseburger, Italian from Pizzana, sushi in Little Tokyo, and pastries at Bianca’s near The Platform in Culver City. Our nights out would feature cocktails at Mama Shelter, Perch, Spire73, Harriet’s Rooftop and Elephante. After we’ve rooftop bar hopped all the way from DTLA to the west side, another essential must-go event is attending a jazz concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Finally, we would end the trip off with a bang by heading to to the Larchmont Village Farmers market and enjoying some Water Ice at Happy Ice.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my amazing parents. I am thankful for their continuous love, guidance and support throughout my journey. I would not be where I am today without them!
