We had the good fortune of connecting with Kahai Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kahai, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music has always intrigued me, even since I was a kid. I knew that I wanted it to be an integral part of my life. While still in school, I tried other ventures, thinking of careers as many that age do, but nothing really grabbed my attention, or made me want to pursue it. It wasn’t until college that I really started focusing on music. Even during that time I was trying different avenues in the music industry, but still didn’t feel complete. Once I really came to the self-realization that creating music was the path that I really wanted, I couldn’t stray and had to put everything into pursuing it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart, or makes me or my sound unique, is that I have explored and delved into many different genres along my journey, until now, ultimately reaching at techno. Not saying that I am the first or only one to do this, but I believe that those influences really resonate in my work, making my sound have that signature ‘me’ in it. The journey to get to where I am at now started back in the beginning of college almost 15 years ago, and there has been many ups and downs. The best way I overcame challenges along the way was just perseverance. I knew that I had an end goal in mind (and still do), so as long as I just continue down the path, I will make it. I know that is easier said than done, and I have had times when I wanted to stop, but looking back I am glad I kept through it, because there is nothing else career wise (and lifestyle wise) that will truly make me happy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the Mar Vista area so my go-to places are around there. Manana and Philz are my go to for coffee. For quick bites, Mitsuwa Market or Fatty Mart are great stops! There are plenty of taco trucks around too, all of the ones I’ve gone too I have gone back again, plus they are usually open late. And if it’s warm, for sure heading to the beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, there are so many influences in my life that I could shout out, we’d be here all day. But mostly, it’s the people close to me that continue to push me and give me support on my artist journey. My partner Alexandria, my brother Luke (Starkiller), my family back home in Hawaii, plus many more.
Also, special shout out to 6amgroup! I have had the incredible opportunity to be working with their Artistmap Program, which has opened so many doors for me and has greatly helped propel my artist career.
