We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaitlyn Bui and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaitlyn, what inspires you?
I’m really inspired by women who break the mold and dive into areas traditionally dominated by men. Seeing them push through barriers and challenge the status quo is such a powerful reminder that we can follow our passions, no matter what society expects. These trailblazing women show that gender doesn’t limit our potential and they’re paving the way for all of us, redefining what it means to be a woman today.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Making content about fishing is a real luxury, and I know many people don’t have the chance to fish in their backyard to feed their families, let alone film it. I didn’t grow up in a fishing family, so I’ve had to learn everything on my own. There have been so many times I thought I was ready, only to realize I wasn’t and had to go home and try again the next day. I fail a lot, but the exciting part isn’t just about finally catching something—it’s about not giving up. I’m incredibly grateful that I can bring my audience along with me on this fishing journey every time I’m out there. I hope they feel like they’re fishing right alongside me, feeling the thrill of the catch. Their presence means everything to me, and I truly value their time and attention. Knowing that they choose to spend it with me fills me with immense gratitude and pushes me to keep sharing my experiences with them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Francisco holds a special place in my heart as one of the best cities in the world. Picture the perfect day: it begins with a mouthwatering breakfast sandwich from Devil’s Teeth Baking Company in the Sunset. And hey, while you’re there, why not grab one for me too? You can head down to Ocean Beach, where you can watch me fish while enjoying your sandwich. Then, we’d embark on a leisurely stroll northward, hiking to Land’s End to marvel at the breathtaking sight of our iconic Golden Gate Bridge (she’s actually orange vermillion, you know).
After working up an appetite, we’d venture to Gao Viet Kitchen to indulge in the legendary Phozilla—a giant pho bowl featuring a dinosaur-sized beef rib and a whole Maine lobster. Yes, you heard that right. If, by some miracle, we’re still able to walk after that feast, we’d meander through Chinatown, admiring the vibrant decorations and trinkets.
Next stop: Pier 39 to catch a glimpse of the ever-chill sea lions. Dinner would be a cozy affair at North Beach’s Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, where we’d share a classic margherita pizza and bucatini. Even if we can barely finish dinner, we simply can’t end the day without getting boba from My Cup of Tea. It’s the perfect sweet note to wrap up our unforgettable day in the city by the bay.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be making content as confidently or comfortably today if it weren’t for the OG YouTubers who made it normal to share their unique Asian experiences online. People like Weylie Hoang, Sophia Chang, and WongFu Productions really paved the way by telling their own stories and building their presence on the internet. Their courage and authenticity inspired me to embrace my identity and create content that reflects our diverse backgrounds.
