We had the good fortune of connecting with Kal Marshell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kal, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose a career in music & the arts because It’s the one true passion & constant force in my life and I feel this gift of mine can inspire positive change throughout the world.

I was born singing & writing songs. I was born into a musical family in Chicago,IL.

With music being with me forever, honestly I hope that I’ll be able to keep creating music and performing until I’m ready to stop.

I pursued a musical career my whole life. I did more as a child but wasn’t prepared and had some struggles to overcome.

In the beginning of my adult hood I followed the norm and started finding a 9-5.

With a few college credits I joined the workforce while excelling in corporate America I was also able to become an entrepreneur. I worked in hair & makeup, fashion, & television.

After being laid off from corporate America I decided to do what I loved and still feel I was created for.

I pursued music, song writing, vocal production, and collaborations full time and moved to Los Angeles, CA.

I followed my heart and literally found a manager before I left Chicago. It all started to fall into place after I decided to follow my purpose and what drives me.

I’ve met so many amazing talents that have given me guidance and have helped in my career as an emerging artist.

I’ve opened & performed for legendary entertainers and I’m extremely grateful for the the support I’m currently receiving on my eighth single entitled Come Thru released May 6, 2022. I now know I’ve made the right decision.

I pursued what I loved more than money and what I found is my purpose.

No amount of money can equate to taking the leap of faith and sticking the landing.

It may be more difficult but I don’t mind a challenge & that’s why I pursued my passion and career in music.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Like most artist I always wanted to pursue music. Unlike most artist I was tall, awkward, always told I had no talent, bullied, overweight, and really didn’t have friends.

This forced me to write music and I recorded my first song in the studio with my mom at 11.

I started to pursue my music even harder and as I continued to receive rejection from more and more people.

I refused to quit and listened to the criticism and found construction in everyone and it didn’t matter to me if it was or wasn’t me for to do so because I knew what I wanted so I had to continue to go after it until it became right and real.

I went through many adversities on my journey but the one lesson I’ve learned is you cannot allow your past to make you bitter in your present or future.

Take accountability and as you grow and receive the support you desire you’ll continue to find happiness and improve.

This is how I’m able to release me eighth studio single Come Thru and I’m extremely grateful to finally know that I can and we can do whatever you want to do in life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friends would have so much fun and we would go everywhere as long as I don’t have a show lol. So here’s the spots you might catch me at.

Eating spots:

Wednesday:

My guest would go to Sals Gumbo Shack in Long Beach, CA.

“I would say they must have the gumbo and try the Kal – Shell Kool Aid”

Friday:

We would go to “Annie’s Soul Delicious” on Fairfax.

“The catfish is amazing and the Kali Punch is the truth”

My hangout spots:

Monday evening: Sofitel Jazz Night & Open Mic or the Brass monkey for Karaoke with JR.

Both can be fun, very diverse mix of people.

Tuesday evening & the first Wednesday of the month:

I would invite them to Inglewood, CA to a new members only club. Elite by Tatsyz on western.

This spot is a hidden gem for talent and live soulful music. Plus the Taco Tuesdays are crazy with just the right amount of fun.

We would go to Venice and Seal beach and maybe go down Hollywood Blvd to some amazing karaoke spots.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First I must shout out and thank God for this amazing opportunity.

To my mom Jessica I love you for making me & loving me.

Thanks to my biological family for everything I wouldn’t be me today without you.

To my extended family, friends, fans I love you all forever and will be forever humbled by your support.

To the amazing legends & icons that I’ve worked with as I’ve grown. I’m forever grateful to have had the opportunity to open your stages, learn from, and perform with you.

A special thank you for the lessons Miki Howard, Ginuwine, Jennifer Hudson & Aretha Franklin these moments reassured me that I have made the right choice.

I must say thank you to the audience reading this article and last but not least to the amazingly talented people at VoyageLA for thinking of me for this.

I’m extremely humbled by your consideration, kindness, and support.
