We had the good fortune of connecting with KarenLee and Cam Poter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KarenLee and Cam, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being authentic! Our goal is to make the uncomfortable conversations comfortable. We are successful because we try very hard to not give a sh*t about what people think of us. We love to make people laugh by being truthful and at times self-deprecating.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Like all good comedies, our podcast Sex Talk With My Mom was born out of tragedy. In 2006, we lost our husband and father to murder. After an intense period of grieving, KarenLee (the mom) started dating again and created a YouTube channel to help other women get back in the dating game the second time around. Her channel quickly became a haven for bawdy, no-holds-barred conversations. As a comedian, Cam (the son) sought refuge from the awkwardness by using her material in his stand-up. Eventually we united efforts and created the best (and only) sex podcast hosted by a mom and son.

We’ve been podcasting for eight years and still find each other amusing. KarenLee has written two books about re-defining the word Cougar to be a confident, older, unique, genuine, assertive and racy woman. Cam has spent over a decade studying clowning to grow comfortable sharing his greatest vulnerabilities and idiocy with the world.

We’ve encountered challenges, especially when it comes to speaking about our personal lives on the podcast. Somehow through supporting each other (and some gentle teasing), we’ve found a way to laugh through the awkwardness and express what most others would be too scared to share publicly (let alone with their mother/son). We’ve definitely kept to our manifesto of “Not giving a sh*t about what others think.” Some of the lessons we’ve learned include: To not take ourselves too seriously, admit when we’re wrong, apologize when we’ve hurt someone’s feelings, and that by exposing our most vulnerable sides we give people the opportunity to love and support us.

We love our podcast family, the “Sneaky Freaks,” who encourage us through monthly Zoom calls and by texting us their answers to our Sneaky Freak question of the week. We’ve tried various formats for our show over the years, from interviewing pornstars and sexologists to comedians and ex-lovers. The one that resonates the most with us and our fans is when we banter just the two of us.

Currently we are working with our family to create a TV version of Sex Talk With My Mom.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We love all the comedy and music that LA has to offer. For comedy, we’d recommend shows at the Lyric Hyperion, Elysian Theater, Public Displays of Altadena, and the Hollywood Improv (especially when we’re performing). There’s nothing like the Greek Theater for an outdoor music experience. The food at Yamashiro is excellent and they have great comedy in the back room on Tuesday nights. Sports games at the new Sofi Stadium and classic rock concerts at The Kia Forum are some of the best. Our favorite Italian restaurants are Rao’s and La Pergoletta. We highly recommend checking out Thai Town for amazing Thai food, especially Salaya Thai (great vegan options).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
KarenLee and Cam’s grandfather, Dr. Harold Shrifter who taught us the correct anatomical parts to the human body. No saying pee pee or wee wee in our house!
