We had the good fortune of connecting with Karly O’Keefe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karly, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Being a people person. I love people. I love getting to know them and hearing their stories.

Working as an esthetician, I never imagined there would be so much human connection in both a personal and professional aspect.

I assumed that doing facials would be a mostly quiet experience for myself and the client and it is in fact the opposite.

A huge part of my job is to make my clients feel comfortable and safe. They need to trust me and I’ve built such a wonderful repatour with my clients by having an open line of communication.

That may mean they need to get something personal off their chest that day, or that they haven’t been taking the best care of their skin since the last time i saw them, or maybe they’ve been using some products at home that they know I wouldn’t approve of but they wanted to try anyway. All of these things are equally important in the grand scheme of things, I trust them to be open and honest and they know I would never judge them, therefor they are.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
This job takes so much hard work and dedication. Sometimes i’m shocked I have even made it this far. I had no idea what I was getting into, or that the skincare industry would erupt into what it is now.

I think there is a slight misconception that being an esthetician is just really fun all the time and there’s no stress involved because “it’s just a facial”.

For me, the stakes are extremely high with every single treatment I do. People want to see results in their skin. They want to know you are using the best products out there. They want to invest in their skin.

I do hold myself to this standard and it’s not always possible to see the changes in the skin right way, but that is always my goal. I work for my clients. They trust me and will always appreciate them and bring everything I have to the table, or in this case…massage bed 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First stop- In and Out.

Then a trip out to Point Dume in Malibu, my all time favorite beach.

Definitely a stop at Casa Vega on Ventura Blvd. for some Mexican food and margs.

Shopping is a must- I take all my friends to Wasteland in Studio City.

Then Griffith Observatory. The view is amazing

Lastly – Dinner at La Petit Trois

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been really lucky to have met and worked for some great estheticians and medical professionals along my journey.

I first started at Gina Mari Skincare in Beverly Hills where I got to work along side her and A wonderful dermatologist named Kelly Bickle. I wouldn’t be the esthetician I am today without either of their guidance and knowledge.

I am also a huge fan of Candace Morino aka “The LA Facialist” who I discovered about five years ago via instagram. She is a true professional and i’m so inspired by all she has accomplished.
