We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Castro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson that my career has taught me has been to believe in myself first. Outside validation is not the goal. The confidence one exudes comes across and when we believe in ourselves, others will too.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My songs are my pride and joy. I usually write my songs from experience I’ve had or current world times. I add a different feel or sound in each song I write as I grew up listening to Jazz, RnB, Rock, and Soul. I got to my current place in my career by believing in myself. It was not easy along the way and I continue to have difficult times. I want the world to know that being your true self sets you free. Others will not always support you but if you are persistent, you can do anything.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Long Beach. I would take my best friend on a duffy ride (a small boat) that travels along the Naples Island channels. After that we would go to Ola Mexican Kitchen at 2nd & PCH for the best lobster tacos and watermelon/jalapeno margaritas. Perhaps followed by a little dancing or beach walk depending on our state of mind.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had many people help me get to the next level in my career. Each person, producer, voice coach…has provided me with different insight into myself and career. I am an avid reader and self reflector so the self explorative books that I continue to read and have read have truly aided in my ability to persist my singing career. The book “Ask and It Is Given,” by Jerry and Esther Hicks, Maya Angelou’s poems and love of humanity helped me be a better person and songwriter. Jay Shetty is an amazing author who’s helped my journey as well.
