Meet Kate Cohen | mixed media artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up outside Cleveland Ohio in a town called Lakewood. At 19 I entered a five year course at The Cleveland Institute of Art. It is a private art school which started in 1882. It belongs to of the Independent Colleges of Art.
The first two years were devoted to the basics, such as Life Drawing, Basic Design, Color Theory and 3D Design. Each class was one full day of study.
By the third year, we declared a major, were given a studio and treated as men and women starting our art practice that would last a lifetime.
Each semester we showed our work in a gallery setting standing before the entire school talking about our art and answering questions of those who attended. Our three professor team then gathered in private to deliberate if they saw enough growth to continue our studies. Many did not continue.
The education I received at The Cleveland Institute of Art was the most valuable experiences that inform my art practice to this day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My soul serves as the compass that guides me towards pieces that resonate deeply within me. Abstraction provides the space to explore line, color, and shape. I’m always curious as to where it will all lead.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them for a beach walk with lunch at The Zinc followed by live music at The Cliff’s Restaurant.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
