We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Grant and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Nothing ever goes as planned, and that’s ok! No matter the project, product launch, partnership, or meeting – unexpected obstacles and roadblocks will always occur. Regardless of how detailed your plan is, things will never align 100% with how you had it mapped out. You will plan and replan countless times. Adjusting your plan or strategy does not mean that you have failed. The ability to quickly maneuver allows you to better position yourself (or your company) for the next growth phase. The key is to keep adjusting your plan and moving forward.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
FREE AGENT SKINCARE is a collective of Beauty Industry non-conformists (“Free Agents” if you will) that are challenging beauty industry standards to establish a better way of making products that are truly effective at improving the look of skin. We manufacture in small batches to bring people fresh, science-based skincare free from harmful chemicals and synthetic preservatives. One of the most exciting things about our first year of business has been the outpouring of positive feedback from our customers. We never dreamed of having customers that are so passionate about the brand. We have customers asking us to create an auto-ship program, so they never go a day without our products. It’s pretty heartwarming. FREE AGENT SKINCARE did not happen overnight. Our Co-Founders have been working in the industry for over 60 years collectively. We all met during that time and started talking about what we would do differently if we owned a skincare brand. We all worked together at various companies throughout the years and kept coming back to the idea of doing a brand that centered around fresh manufacturing and high performance, clean formulations. While this is still our first year of business, it has been unusually challenging for certain. We did not factor a pandemic into our business plan. Every financial plan we made had to be reworked multiple times throughout the year. Each of the Co-Founders has had to wear several hats ranging from CEO to order packer. There are no egos in this group of people. We are here to do whatever it takes to continue growing this brand and company. If we did not have great products that customers continue to reorder, we would not still be here. The takeaways from this year have been that impeccable customer service and quality products are king! We want the world to know that our brand delivers dramatic results with products that are free from harsh preservatives and “fluffy” marketing ingredients. Our fresh, small-batch products pack a big punch when it comes to performance.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to create my perfect LA itinerary, it would look something like this: Huntington Gardens – I would call ahead and have their restaurant pack a picnic and deliver it to the Japanese garden, where we would enjoy a wine and cheese board overlooking the tranquil valley. Tour of Downtown LA that included China Town, The Bradbury Building, Snacks at Grand Central Market, then head to The Broad Museum to soak up some art, then finish the day off with dinner overlooking LA at Perch. I’d plan a morning drive up the coast, stopping at the Getty Villa for a completely different take on art, then heading up towards Malibu, where we would stop for lunch at Paradise Cove so we can dig our toes in the sand and enjoy a nice fruity drink. Heading back down the coast, we would squeeze in a little shopping at Malibu Country Mart, then meander inland to watch the sunset while savoring the delicious offerings at Yamashiro.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to Reuben Driggers, as well as the Co-Founders of FREE AGENT SKINCARE. Reuben Driggers has had an enormous influence in my life, first as my boss at a previous company and now as a friend and mentor. He is the embodiment of a strong leader and brilliant creative professional. I also owe a huge shout out to the group of people that came together to help start FREE AGENT SKINCARE with me. Without their selfless team approach and expertise, we would not be around at this point.
