We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Grey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It’s funny because growing up, I always assumed I would have a very easy job and live an easy lifestyle just because I didn’t think I was smart enough to do something ‘big’. I would compose little songs on the piano but never dare call myself a songwriter because that’s only for cool people. I actually started making music a few years ago because I felt this strong calling to try, and ever since I wrote my first song I knew I couldn’t live without doing it. Almost like it wasn’t a choice. It’s also the only thing I’m good at. Writing music comes so naturally to me that it would be a waste of a human to not do what I was designed to do. I also think that making music about what I’ve gone through in my life (and will continue to go through) makes it all worth it. The trauma, the stress, and all these intense feelings were worth it because I got to make art out of it all, which I think is so beautiful.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There are certain songs that I go into making purely just for myself. I know in my mind that I won’t be releasing the song, so there is no sort of subconscious pressure to do it the ‘right’ way. Those are always the most fun to make and are the most raw pieces of art I have. I will say that working mostly always alone might set me apart from others. As much as I want to collaborate in the future, working with just myself and not having to explain or filter any ideas to another person in hopes for agreement and validation is non existent. It is easy to be honest with yourself, and having that come through in my music is extremely important. Success to me is making the best and most beautiful art that I can make in that moment. I hope to continue to do that, and maybe even inspire others to do the same.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definately first take them to grab a bite to eat at Monty’s Good Burger. Whether you’re vegan or not, Monty’s is a staple in my book. I would then suggest going to Griffith Observitory, preferably on a weekday. Theres a nice hiking trail up to the observatory that I love to take as well. After the hike and views, you can’t go wrong by heading to the grove to get some good food. I love getting one thing from several different places and trying new things. I also love this little park called Franklin Canyon Park in Beverly Hills. It has the cutest little lake/pond and is a great place to reset and relax in nature. I would also take my friend to the Goodwil on San Fernando Rd in Glendale. Its a hidden gem for thrifting and I for some reason always find something I ‘need’ to have. Theres this little coffee bar in Burbank called The Palm. They have the BEST chocolate donut I’ve ever had, and its even gluten free. We’d also have to hit up the the Ruby Fruit saphic wine bar for the queer energy and mocktails.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Grandparents are the reason I am the artist and person I am today. If it wasn’t for their consistent support, care, and direction, I don’t think I would have started making and releasing music. Both my Grandma and my Grandpa make me feel like my art is the most precious thing in the world, and that alone makes it easier to share with others. My Grandpa was actually the one who helped choose my stage name and helped with the overall logistics of starting my career. I can’t tell you how happy my Grandma gets when we get to sing together. She definitely gave me her voice. My Grandparents are such incredible people and I’m so grateful to have the relationship that I have with them. They inspire me every day, and I hope someday to make an impact on someone like they did on me.
