We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Oahu, Hawaii and grew up there until I was a pre-teen. Today, it still feels like home. I have a profound reverence for Hawaiian culture and the land. Living with the “Aloha Spirit” means to live with compassion for everything and everyone. The Aloha Spirit is at my core and fuels my passion as an artist. As a young child I was fortunate to study ballet for many years. Ballet taught me discipline, precision, tenacity and grace.
Through movement and music I also realized the interconnected impact art truly has. It has the power to transform us, heal us, inspire us, and make us think differently. Those lessons have certainly laid the groundwork for how I work as an actor today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The road to where I am today was a winding one. More so than I ever anticipated. After studying theater in college I moved to L.A., alone and full of unbridled optimism. Months later came a heavy brush with bad talent managers as well as unfamiliar and crushing anxiety. Painfully, I came to the realization that in order to establish longevity on this career path I’d need to hit the pause button and return when better equipped. When that would be? I assumed only be a few months, but a few months turned into a few years.
I worked my way up the business ladder of a few of the largest companies in the world. I held global seminars, presented in boardrooms, budgeted, negotiated, and even found my way back in front of the camera on live television. It was a stable, professional, AND exciting career. I was, dare I even say, good at it. I was happy. I adapted to the trappings of achievement. But, was I truly fulfilled? No.
However, I held onto that security for as long as I possibly could, until the door of success was slammed shut and a window of opportunity opened.
Becoming a “beginner” again wasn’t easy. Especially after reaching the success ceiling somewhere else. But, the beauty of that is knowing that you can.
I’ve found that security and success alone weren’t satisfying. Although earned, they were just byproducts of hard work.
But, striving for success in what I consider to be my purpose, that’s what I find truly fullfilling.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles has so much to offer. Each area of the city offers a different energy with its own historical heartbeat. I love hiking up the trails that overlook the city. The Griffth Observatory is a beautiful spot to take in picturesque vistas. For vistors that love film as much as I do, The Academy Museum is a great place to see all things related to the Academy Awards history. You can gaze upon orginal copies of scribbled upon screenplays, costumes and props that date back to the golden era of Hollywood. Additionally, Universal Studios is fun for any movie fan. I still enjoy taking a tram ride through the historical backlot just as much as I love shooting there.
A breezy wak around the Hollywood Reservior, underneath the historic Hollywood Sign, is the perfect start to any morning, Follow it up with a mimosa filled brunch at Aerloom Bakery or a slice of raw cheesecake from Sun Cafe.
During the holidays a day trip to up to the charming town of Solvang or a visit to see the shimmering lights of 123 Farm, in Cherry Valley, are well-worth the drive.
Perusing local farmers markets and shopping areas are typical L.A. jaunts. Refeul with a flat white from The Coffee Bean or Alfread Coffee. Dinner at Santuri or Black Market Liquor Bar are my go-to favorites.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
