We had the good fortune of connecting with Kati Kanerva and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kati, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’ve always been someone who’s not too scared to take risks. As a young adult I traveled around the world alone. Later on, I was doing couple of Muay Thai fights what was one the scariest thing I’ve ever done.

Moving to US from Finland without a job was a big risk itself. Changing the career from TV directing to opening up small business in completely new industry for me was risky. Opening up a business middle of pandemic and a new concept in US was one of the biggest risks I’ve taken.

Don’t get me wrong I have had many sleepless nights over the risks I’ve taken but somehow I have managed to get over all the challenges. Sometimes I think why did I put myself into this situation but when I look back I wouldn’t change a thing.

What should our readers know about your business?
Dresscue is rent “rent-a-rack” store. “Rent a rack” is a concept from Scandinavia and means that anyone can rent a rack from our shop and sell their preloved clothing with us. Vendors can bring maximum 50 pieces at once + 5 accessories (shoes or bags). We have an online platform where vendors can reserve a rack, price their items and track their sales in real time. Once they sell something they can replenish the rack . We provide everything: coat hangers, hang tags and security tags. It’s a great way to recycle the clothes you don’t wear anymore whilst making some extra money.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My Family was just visiting from Finland. We took them to Angeles National Forest for a hike. We did a drive through Topanga to Malibu and ate in Neptunes net. They were Shopping at Dresscue of course. We walked around in Marina Del Rey where and saw the sea lions. Then we visited Palms Springs and Joshua tree.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Joonas is my business partner. Even though he has his own full time job I’m lucky to have him helping me on the back round. He’s on top of our financials and fixes everything from printers to a broken furnitures. I couldn’t have not done this without him.

Other shoutout I want to give to our manager Susy who’s been with us from the start. She has created a lot of structure in the company and runs the store daily day basis. She has definitely been a blessing for us!
