We had the good fortune of connecting with Katina Fields and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katina, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
How to know whether to keep going or to give up…Hmm…That’s a great question!! I determine my will/drive to give up if I no longer love what I am doing. It’s hard to motivate yourself you absolutely hate what you are doing in life. I’m happy, persistent and more determined if I love what I am doing. That’s why I’m successful at being a Celebrity Publicist, because I absolutely love what I do, and I love my career.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I currently have two business; the first business is called UTOPA~TT(pronounced: ooh-ta-pah) Consulting Agency which is a Management Consulting company for Music Artist and Entertainers. KFields PR Agency is my second business; it’s my baby! I’ve been in the mass communications field for more than 10 years. I kicked my career off in the world of broadcast journalism, as a TV News Producer and Special Assignment Reporter in the Carolinas. There, I started networking and meeting entertainers and celebrities and basically growing my contact list of who’s who in the industry. I eventually left the fast paced, crazy world of TV News and jumped into Public Relations, Media Relations and Corporate Communications. I’ve worked for the private sector, non-profits and the federal government; however, I was miserable working for the federal government. That misery led me to look for other ways to make income and become my own boss. That’s when the idea of having my own public relations agency popped into my mind. I thought of a name, got my logos created, made business cards made, a website, and started networking and socializing. I went to every movie screening, party, red carpet event and social event in and out of town just to mingle and pass my business cards out. Because I have such an outgoing personality, it was easy for me to sell my services to potential clients. I moved from the small town of Darlington, SC to the big city of Los Angeles, CA to grow my business and fulfill my dreams of becoming a Celebrity Publicist. My small-town roots are what made me think of my business slogan – which is, there are Three Sides to every story: Yours, The Other Person’s and The Truth. Our Agency investigates ways to service the side that currently represents you. We are a small, full-service, agency that provides services to entertainers, Athletes, small businesses and non-profits. I would say the toughest lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t trust to many people in the world of entertainment and stay in tuned with your inner power of discernment of others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend is visiting me, on the first day I would drive them through Crenshaw! Ha! Thanks to the movie Boyz-N-The Hood, everybody wants to see Baldwin Hills Mall, South Central, Crenshaw, oh and Inglewood. Then, I would take them to the Griffith Observatory to see all of Los Angeles and a close up look of the Hollywood sign, which brings me to my next stop, the famous Hollywood Blvd. I would take them to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Dolby Theater, the Chinese Theater, and to see the crazy Spider Man character that swings on the stop light pole. On day two, I would take them to see the beautiful California beaches and the Pacific Coast. I would take them to Venus Beach to buy some overpriced souvenirs, then to Santa Monica Beach to see the pier, and then to a few Malibu Beaches. On day three, I would take them to the very expensive Rodeo Drive so they could do a little wish shopping. After that, I would take them to see all of the beautiful homes in Beverly Hills and Bel Air. I would end the day on a nice scary drive down the winding famous Mulholland Drive. On day four we would go eat breakfast at the world-famous Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, and then take a hike at Runyon Canyon to work off all of the chicken and waffles calories. We would then go home, change and head out to Universal Studios and enjoy an evening of fun rides and attractions. On the fifth and final day (because my friends know they only get a week with me – Ha!), I would show them all of the famous studios. We would start off at Warner Brothers and Disney in Burbank and work our way up to Mid-town/Hollywood/Studio City to see Paramount, CBS and other notable studios. Lastly, we would end our night with laughs catching two comedy shows. First at the world-famous Laugh Factory, then we would drive to Inglewood and catch the last show at the famous J Spot Comedy Club. After that, I would take them to a few bars in the NOHO area before calling it a night. Oh, and the next morning on our way to LAX I’ll be sure to let them drive, just to get a taste of the good ole LA traffic.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
TOh WOW!! This is exciting, YASS…I want to give my sister Carolyn Bush a Shoutout!! My sister practically raised me and taught me all of the important life lessons: how to love, how to forgive, how to be dependent and how to be a caring, beautiful, smart and compromising woman. I know there is no such thing as a perfect person, but my sister is DAMN NEAR close to perfect as perfect can be in this world today! She is my heart and I love her dearly!
