We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina and Jordan Abbott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina and Jordan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Freedom. Our end goal has been to have the freedom to enjoy the life that we are building together and use it to bless others. We both grew up with really traditional mindsets of having the standard 9-5 job, it was a safe and consistent space to be in. When we decided to start our photography/videography business I think it meant that we not just let go of the job but change of mindset. It really did take about a year of unwinding that traditional mindset in order to get our feet fully ready for our company. Coming from a fashion background I felt like I had a little more of the headspace and drive to push the limits of what our business could be creatively. Jordan coming from a business and marketing operations background it really balanced us not only creatively but with all the business aspects. Basically a tech nerd at heart.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Trust your gut. The beauty of having your own business is it doesn’t have to fit any mold. I think that goes with trusting your intuition in every turn. We are wedding, lifestyle, and editorial photographers. We’ve been married for 5 years and just had a little boy, we believe in family and balance. We always knew we wanted to create something together and I think it makes it that much sweeter. I think what sets us apart is us, you can have the same camera and all the gear but how we view something is different than another. I think that is pretty cool, that everyone has a unique perspective on what they think is beautiful. I think a lesson we have learned along the way is that when we have come up against challenges, whatever happens in our business is up to us and we always want to serve our clients with honor.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I don’t think we would be anywhere without the couples who have trusted us throughout their journeys. We love what we do it is one of the most fulfilling thing to love on a couple by celebrating them and capturing moments for their family legacy. We firmly believe none of this would be possibly without the Lord, our faith is so important to the very core of our foundation and care for people. Photography can be such a vulnerable expression and we don’t take it lightly that people are choosing us to be someone who can capture their moments. The people that we have had the opportunity to learn from have provided so many opportunities to shape and mold our business. We would recommend for anyone to invest in their creative and professional growth, weather through workshops or mentorships or just getting coffee with a creative you admire. So we would like to shout out and thank these people who have impacted our philosophy and our approach to every aspect of what our business looks like; Laurken Kendall, Melissa Marshall, and Dan & Nardia Niles (Foolishlyrushin).
