We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Durairaj and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kay, what do you attribute your success to?
The success of Beauty By Dr. Kay (www.beautybydrkay.com) is a direct reflection of my commitment to excellence and my unwavering dedication to advancing the field of aesthetic medicine. At the heart of my brand is a philosophy that merges cutting-edge, evidence-based medicine with an artist’s eye for beauty and perfection. I believe that true success comes from a deep understanding of both the science and the art of aesthetics, which is why I continually invest in research and education to stay at the forefront of the industry. My practice is built on the principles of patient safety, scientific rigor, and a passion for natural beauty. This approach has not only earned the trust of my patients but also allowed me to influence the broader aesthetic community. Through my brand, I’ve introduced Modern Aesthetic Theory and Artistry, an educational platform that offers online courses to injectors worldwide. This initiative is breaking down barriers and setting new standards in patient safety and beauty outcomes, empowering practitioners across the globe to achieve excellence in their work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a California native, and my upbringing has profoundly shaped who I am today. Growing up near the beach, I was surrounded by the natural beauty of the Pacific coastline, which instilled in me a deep appreciation for the organic and the aesthetic. My parents, both physicians, fostered an environment where curiosity about the human body and its functions was encouraged. Dinner table conversations often revolved around medicine, surgery, and anatomy, sparking my early interest in these fields. This early exposure laid the foundation for my fascination with how the body works—from the microscopic cellular level to the broader anatomical structures. But my background isn’t just rooted in science; I’ve always had a strong artistic streak. Painting, ceramics, and pottery have been lifelong hobbies that allow me to express creativity in a different way. This artistic sensibility has significantly influenced my approach to facial plastic surgery, where I see each patient as a unique canvas. The intersection of art and science in my life has allowed me to celebrate the human form through my work, crafting natural beauty outcomes that honor the individuality of each face.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, I’d want to give them a quintessential Los Angeles experience that blends culture, natural beauty, and relaxation. We’d start our week with a visit to the Getty Villa, one of LA’s cultural gems. The Getty Villa is more than just a museum; it’s an architectural masterpiece set high in the hills, offering panoramic views of the city and the Pacific Ocean. We’d spend a day exploring its world-class art collections, from European paintings and sculptures to decorative arts and photography. The gardens are a must-see, too—beautifully manicured with a stunning central garden that’s a work of art in itself.

For the next day, I’d take my friend to Santa Monica Beach, where we could experience the iconic California coast in all its glory. We’d start the day with a leisurely walk along the Santa Monica Pier, taking in the sights and perhaps enjoying a ride on the Ferris wheel for a bird’s eye view of the beach. Then, we’d rent bikes and ride along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, also known as The Strand, which runs parallel to the coastline and offers a perfect blend of ocean breezes and people-watching.

After a morning of activity, we’d settle in for lunch at one of the beachfront cafes—something casual and quintessentially Californian, like a fresh seafood taco and a cold drink. The rest of the afternoon would be spent relaxing on the beach, whether it’s sunbathing, dipping our toes in the Pacific, or simply enjoying the sound of the waves. For those who love a bit of adventure, we could try paddleboarding or take a surfing lesson, embracing the full California beach experience.

In the evening, we’d head to a rooftop bar like Elephante, where we could sip cocktails while watching the sun set over the ocean—an experience that’s nothing short of magical. The atmosphere is always vibrant, with a mix of locals and visitors enjoying the stunning views and warm breezes.

Another must-do on our itinerary would be a visit to Griffith Observatory and a hike up to the Hollywood Sign. We’d start with the Griffith Observatory, where we could explore the exhibits, catch a planetarium show, and take in the panoramic views of Los Angeles from the observation deck. It’s the perfect spot for some stunning photos with the city skyline in the background. Afterward, we’d hike up to the Hollywood Sign, taking the trail that offers the best views and the full LA experience. The hike is a great way to get some exercise while also immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Later in the week, we’d balance our beach days with another cultural outing, perhaps visiting the Getty Villa in Malibu, which complements the Getty Center with its focus on ancient Greek and Roman art. This would be followed by a scenic drive along Pacific Coast Highway, where we could stop at one of the many scenic overlooks to take in the majestic ocean views.

By the end of the week, my friend would have experienced the best of what Los Angeles has to offer—a perfect blend of art, culture, relaxation, and natural beauty. We’d have shared great food, enjoyed breathtaking views, and created unforgettable memories in some of my favorite places. And don’t forget I absolutely love shopping on Rodeo Drive for its perfect blend of fashion and vibrant energy!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give special recognition to two individuals who have significantly supported and promoted me this year. Alisha Merlo from Colorescience has been an invaluable ally. Her deep knowledge of skincare, sun defense, and longevity supplements has been instrumental in our mutual learning journey. Alisha’s introductions within her aesthetic network have broadened my exposure, and I admire her extensive experience and scientific insight, which she’s gained over 20 years in the skincare industry. She’s not only a brilliant professional but also a warm and intellectually curious person.

I also want to shout out to the Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress (AMWC) and their dedicated staff. This organization has been pivotal in advancing aesthetics and the scientific pursuit of beauty. Their conferences reach all corners of the globe, providing education and opportunities in aesthetics at every level. I applaud their tremendous work in bringing scientific leaders to the podium to discuss the latest advances and technologies in aesthetics.
