Meet Kellen Meyer | Fiber Artist – Sculptor – Collaborator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kellen Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kellen, what makes you happy? Why?
I’m happiest in the Wild, Outdoor World. With my feet in the sand, knee deep in the water. Exploring the underwater world through scuba and free diving. Sailing the waters with the wind in my hair. Hiking for an epic view. Frolicking with my children and dogs at the beach. Exploring the world through travel with all its diverse people and cultures. Sipping cashew lattes with my honey in our 100 year old home. Reading all the books. Then talking about all the books. Laughing with friends. Spending time with my brothers and extended family. Then taking all that richness back into my studio by the sea and creating Art.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My Art is Rooted in Nature and influenced by the colors, shapes and textures in the wild outdoors. This influence weaves a common thread throughout my work. I entwine a variety of natural fibers to create hand-woven, one-of-a-kind works of fine art that integrate knitting, crochet, and various weaving techniques. I explore the natural world and nurture story within each piece.
I create in my studio overlooking a bird sanctuary. I walk daily on the beach collecting colors, stories, and images. I love fairytales, afternoon light, Magic in the everyday and warm sourdough bread. I believe in the power of Love and Lattes.
I, also, encourage Art to be Inclusive and Magical and full of Hope. For we are all Entwined through Art and the beauty of the Natural World.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is…
One must dive into the deep end of what they love the most. I spent years dipping my toes in. Wading in up to my knees. Swirling the water with my hands. Until I dove into my Art, head first and decided that success or not, it would be worth doing rather than never knowing for sure. Realizing that I was the only one holding me back from trying. Exploring. Creating. Making mistakes and changing it again. It hasn’t always been easy but its created a curiosity in me to see what adventures it will bring. Through hard work. Dedication. And a little bit of magic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this to all those who believed in me and saw the true Artist before I believed it myself.
