We had the good fortune of connecting with Kellii Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kellii, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had 2 objectives. The First was…. Because we were in the middle of a Pandemic and I was just diagnosed with Cancer, I needed to come up with a plan that kept me out of contact with my customer.. and Second, I needed to offer a service that I was an expert at and wasn’t already being offered. The answer was remote drum sessions. While that isn’t super unique, and lot’s of people are doing it, what was unique is that I decided to represent a client base that wasn’t being served. Basically I keep my service very cheap so they can be utilized by musicians that don’t have a lot of money, don’t have access to expensive studios and certainly do not have access to a experienced professional drummer.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I moved to Los Angeles when I was 17 in 1987. I moved not unlike most musicians wanting to be successful and “Make It.” Somewhere in my struggle to become successful I found a profound love for my instrument that would eventually make ,just continuing to play music more important than fame or fortune. There are 1000’s of fantastic drummer’s in the world and a lot of them with a higher skill set than me. I’ve always known that what makes me and what I do special is that I have a unique voice and musical sense that other’s don’t have, so that’s is what I continue to exploit to this day and I believe is why I enjoy such a large client base. Was it difficult for me to find success? I enjoy a resolve and an ability to go after things no matter what and no matter how long it takes. Were there moments that weren’t easy? yes but those are the moments that make it all worth it when it pays off.

I have a very modest size business but that being said, I only wanted to make a living doing what I love to do so I’ve achieved so much on so many levels. I get to provide a service that will enrich countless musicians that otherwise may not have been able to reach their goals or potential. In my mind that gives me the opportunity to give back to something that has and continues to give me so much .

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
that is kinda of a difficult question only because LA is so rich with things to do and experience. I actually had a friend recently reach out to me and ask exactly this so I’ll I give you the same answer.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutout would have to be to all of the fantastic and talented musicians I have had the pleasure to work for and with over the last 36+ years. Without these people and the experience afforded me I would never have attained the skill set of the name recognition to trade on. Secondly but certainly not least important I’d like to thanks Gabe Van at Akira Audio who graciously gave me a place and the tools to make this business a reality at such a low price point.
