We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly J Glusovich and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelly J, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I now understand that balance is truly noticeable in longer spans of time, than in shorter ones. When looking for results within a week or month, we can find ourselves dissatisfied with the results. However, the discipline and efforts in a certain direction can better be seen over a longer stretch of time. The same is true with balance. We all cannot have a simple routine of working 5 days and having 2 days off for leisure. Sometimes our ambitions thrust us into working for a month or 2 straight with no days off. If this is a worthy pursuit, it might warrant such. It might also warrant a vacation for 3 or more weeks or at least longer than the regular vacation span, because the work was more intense and longer lasting than that of the regular work week. A sense of balance should include all things important to that person; work, leisure, family, hobbies, friends, culture. Often we forget that those other things enhance the energies that will be poured back into our work.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a graphic designer, I look at most things graphically. My lens of perception sees the simplicity in structures, situations and especially in terms of visual communication. The job of a graphic designer is largely to communicate a statement, thought or idea in a visually graphic, yet simplistic format so as to prompt rapid understanding of the concept being viewed. An emotion or thought or even a decision is made after viewing an effective graphic. It is this understanding that guides how I write information on my white board in the classroom, how I approach my haircut services for clients and definitely how I design graphics for my clothing line. I am big on flipping something familiar to the subconscious mind with something near to that visual, but intended to communicate something entirely different in context. For me, a graphic is most rewarding when it communicates a concept with relative simple ease while employing some intellectual nuances, so as to add a particular type of satisfaction to the viewer.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a taste of the city, I would plan for visits to some choice rooftop situations for drinks, snacks and a view (Perch, Intercontinental Hotel, Mama’s Shelter, Hotel Erwin), and some food stuffs, ambiance not included (taco trucks, ramen spots, various Sunday food festivals like Smorgasburg, and of course fresh hot churros. After all that eating, a bike ride on the bike path between Venice and Santa Monica seems fitting for a well-rounded visit to Los Angeles.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is an unnamed group of people that don’t seek approval for their creativity. These people won’t rest on a “no” for an answer. They show persistence and remain steadfast in their endeavors. Everyone has dark moments, hours or days, but the climb out of such to find your personal victories is that which fuels the journey. Those individuals that move this way are the ones I watch, read about and emulate in my travels and efforts to move forward.
