We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Hale and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelsey, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?

Over time, my work-life balance has undergone a significant evolution. In the early stages of my career, I was completely consumed by work, often sacrificing personal time and neglecting the importance of maintaining a healthy balance. It was a phase characterized by long hours, constant deadlines, and a relentless drive to succeed. However, as I matured both professionally and personally, I realized the importance of finding a balance between work and life. I made a conscious effort to prioritize spending quality time with friends and family, recognizing their invaluable support and the need to nurture those relationships. Now, I have successfully achieved a great balance, allowing myself to step away from work when needed and dedicating time to activities that bring me joy and rejuvenation. I have come to appreciate that a fulfilling life extends beyond professional accomplishments, and I am committed to maintaining this newfound harmony for my overall well-being and happiness.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a creative professional, particularly as a photographer, comes with its fair share of ups and downs. Unlike more structured professions, there is no predefined roadmap or set of rules to follow. It’s a journey of forging your own path and making it work through your unique vision and style. Along this journey, I have encountered slumps and moments of self-doubt, when inspiration seems elusive and motivation wanes. During such times, I have found solace in engaging in creative test shoots. These experimental projects allow me to break free from the constraints of client work and explore new techniques, ideas, and perspectives. Moreover, I actively seek inspiration in various forms, whether it’s immersing myself in nature during a sunny day walk, delving into art books at the library, or meeting up with other like-minded creatives to exchange ideas and collaborate. These moments of seeking inspiration and connecting with the creative community help reignite my passion and push me forward on my artistic journey, reminding me of the limitless possibilities that lie ahead in the world of photography.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love taking my visitors on hikes! There are so many amazing viewpoints around Los Angeles. I love Mexican food, so usually stop by Tacos Tu Madre, Toca, or the Alma depending on where we are!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh so many people! Firstly, my friends and family from back home that encouraged me to pursue photography in the first place. All my instructors at Van Arts to pushed me and supported me. I’ve also had the opportunity of watching and learning from amazing photographers such as Ramona Rosales, Elizabeth Weinberg and Charlotte Wales. Lastly, of course my husband Alex, who is always supportive and tries to push me creatively!
