We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendall Duplessis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendall, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process originated from wanting to be the first millionaire in my immediate family. As a child I along with my 3 siblings would see my high school dropout mother work to barely make ends meet with minimum wage jobs. At the very young age of 8, I knew and felt in my heart of hearts that I wanted to own a Hair Salon. I loved hair, make-up, and fashion the beauty industry as a whole. When I became a single mother at the tender age of 23 I then knew that having my own business will just be the start of creating my legacy. Once I completed high school I went straight unto Cosmetology school , where I attended a 2 year program at a community college in Downtown, Los Angeles. After I finished the Cosmetology Course and received my licensed now over 14 years ago, I went head first into working at a salon. I did not start off assisting a seasoned Hair Stylist which is ideal nor did I work as a commission paid employee, but started at the very beginning booth renting. Booth renting is not a easy thing to do coming straight from Cosmetology school, but for years I rented my space as a independent contractor to get the necessary experience and knowledge I needed to run a business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a hands on crafty person. I try to have a spirit of excellence in everything that I create. I specialize in Hair Replacement Systems such as hair extensions and hairpieces. I design custom human hair hand-stitched wigs from scratch. I can recreate any color, shape, look that is presented to me. I am proud to be multi talented in the Hair industry. I’m proud to say I can work with all hair types, all nationalities. I did not start in my industry being multi talented it took years of trial and error, and working for high level people to understand perfection. I want the world to know that my blood, sweat, and tears got me to where I am and this is just the beginning. I took a lot of risk, I’ve made really bad decisions in my personal life that affected my professional life and vice versa. I did not receive any financial support from anyone but my hard work and dedication to establishing a legacy for my descendants has paved the way to my success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a best friend visiting the area I would have to take them to the luxurious places California is known for. I love to shop so we will have to visit Rodeo Drive and Melrose. I think these two places can tackle high end and artsy vibes. We would have to go hiking at Runyon Canyon because I think its a exciting place to hike and explore if you were visiting California for the first time. We would also hang out on Ventura Blvd. This is a fun strip to explore with all the dining, shopping, and bars.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to my 13 year old daughter Sa’Nai Kennedy Samuels. For years as a single mom most of my time would be working instead of spending time with her. Sa’Nai has encouraged me to follow my dreams and the infinite indescribable love I have for her has been my motivation.
