Meet Kendra Davis | Labor & Postpartum Doula

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendra, what do you want your legacy to be?
I used to think about this question a lot when I was younger because I always feared I’d be forgotten. I want my legacy to be one that never left anyone behind. I want my legacy to drive people to continually show compassion, serve, and love endlessly. I want my legacy to be that I loved Christ, my husband and children, my community, my clients, and those who surrounded me daily. I want people to remember that I was a kind, outgoing, and selfless individual that poured into others as I drew from Christ. I want people to remember that as scary as it was, I pursued my God given passions in faith and never looked back.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name of my business is Elizabeth’s Daughters! We offer labor, and postpartum Doula services to women and their families. We focus on education, advocacy, and support in the most wonderful time of a families life. I was on track to nursing school, I mean actively applying when my husband and I got news that we would be welcoming our first son into our family. To make a long story short- after experiencing the most traumatic labor and delivery ending up in an emergency C-section which also led to having a terrible fight with postpartum depression I had a different desire from then on. Initially my plan was to become a Nurse Midwife, but after my experience I grew an intense desire to fill a need in my community. I wanted to become a Doula! As a Doula I want to advocate for women in the way that I didn’t receive. There is a deep need for Doulas and midwives in my community simply because black women are dying in childbirth (hospitals in general) at higher rates than any other group. This is a problem that needs to be fixed, and it starts with education, support, and advocacy. Our goal at Elizabeth’s Daughters is to educate support and uplift you during the most sacred Journeys of your life. As a Doula I am devoted to making the birthing space yours again. Intimate, empowering, and safe. You will be heard, and encouraged to assert your voice, as I advocate for you and your family.
I am most proud that I took this step because I am finding myself educating others on what it is we do as birth workers, and each day someone learns the importance of having the mental, physical, and emotional support of a Doula in their lives. I help people see that a Doula serves the entire family! Jumping into this scope of work was not easy- but worth it nevertheless. Majority of my challenges have been financial but my needs are continually being met which is why I keep going. I had clients before I ever even fully launched a business or had a name. Some may ask how to start and my best advice would be with friends and family- experience will always be the best trainer in my opinion.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Wayne county which is central to almost everything fun! I would take my friend to breakfast at townhouse in Detroit- boy do I love their chicken and waffles. There’s so much to do in Detroit we could honestly stay there and have most of our fun. We could visit the DIA which has beautiful art exhibits, or make our way to the Museum of African American History, maybe even the Motown Museum! For dinner we could eat at Texas De Brazil, or even Red smoke bbq which is my personal favorite. There’s so many things to do in my area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my Husband, Quinlan Davis Sr. He has supported me and pushed me to do what I love. there has never been a time where he ever doubted me or spoke negatively about this endeavor. He is a man of faith, and has poured his love on me without fail. There were times when I truly felt fearful of taking the step to become a Doula, and an entrepreneur. This is not something that was built by myself. He has been with me through it all and for that I am thankful!
