We had the good fortune of connecting with Kesha Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kesha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Since a young girl I knew I wanted to work with the elderly. I saw my family care for my great grandfather who had Alzheimer’s disease and at times it was stressful for my family to keep him safe. Watching my aunts, and great grandmother care for him is what sparked my interest in starting a business that would care for the elderly. I went to school, obtained a Masters degree of Social Work and saved my money in order to start the journey in becoming the best care facility for the elderly. Beyond a home is an extended family. We love our residents and we provide respect and dignity to all of our families.
What should our readers know about your business?
Beyond a Home is a premier residential care facility for the elderly. All of our residents have private rooms in a beautifully decorated, 7 bedroom home. We provide client centric care and have created a family atmosphere. My caregivers are loving and compassionate and truly enjoy their job. They all strive to improve the quality of life for our residents. Beyond a Home was an idea I manifested over 20 years ago. It took time for me to gain industry related experience while I worked on my Master’s degree. I volunteer at multiple facilities in order to equip myself with the skills needed to be successful. I tried to start my care home in 2008, but that wasn’t the right time; so I continued to save my money and polish my skills. Most people thought I was crazy to start a business in the middle of a pandemic, with a teenager and two toddlers at home. It was scary, but it didn’t prevent me from moving forward. I knew this was my calling and I went after it. I feel that anything you do out of love can’t fail, so I proceeded on faith.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am more of a foodie, nature lady. I love Malibu beach. Broadstreet oysters has the best lobster rolls. Order your food to go and watch the sunset on the beach. There are so many things to do in the Los Angeles area. You can catch a play or people watch on Hollywood blvd. The rooftop at Mama Shelter is always a good time or you can enjoy the pool at the W hotel. If you need some self care we have the best spas and some beautiful botanical gardens.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I would like to recognize a good friend, Michelle Valdez. She was my motivator and she was by my side throughout the process of getting Beyond a Home ready for business. I also want to thank Tavia Iles-Wooley. Tavia is an amazing communication coach who I call my accountability coach. She sparked a fire under me like no other. All of my family and friends played a part in me starting my business, but a special shout out goes to my Father, Ronald Alexander.
