Meet Kevin Harris (ApeO) | Artist (Rapper)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Harris (ApeO) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always had a deep fascination with sounds. Music has been my lifeline during my darkest moments, often pulling me back from the brink. It’s this profound impact that drove me to become an artist. Through my work, I aim to inspire change, instill faith, and motivate a generation of children, particularly Black and Indigenous youth. I want them to know that, despite any struggles they face, they are free to express whatever is in their hearts. Whatever dreams they have, they already possess the power to make them a reality.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a reflection of my traumas, experiences, and views of the world. For instance, in one of my recent releases, “Freed!?”, I delve into the emotional turbulence of relationships. I often find myself fighting for a connection that never quite reaches its potential, leaving me feeling like a victim and a frustrated hopeless romantic, ready to distance myself from the pursuit of love. In this piece, I explore the complexity of empathy and antagonism, addressing toxic traits while expressing my own frustrations.
Another significant aspect of my work touches on the pressures and anger associated with financial struggles, as illustrated in a song about the relentless pursuit of money and the sacrifices made along the way. Through my music, I aim to channel vulnerability within the realm of hip-hop, creating a safe space for Black men to express their creativity and emotions. I admire artists like Tyler, the Creator, Kendrick Lamar, and Childish Gambino for their authenticity and willingness to embrace vulnerability.
My goal is to offer a fresh essence to hip-hop, with dynamic vocal changes, unique flows, and vivid storytelling that allows listeners to vividly picture my experiences. I want my music to be cinematic, capturing raw emotions and offering a space where individuality and creativity can thrive..

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I’d welcome my guest with a spark of excitement, making them feel at home in my area. We’d start the day at Bob & Edith’s Diner, where I’d get my favorite: bacon, egg, and cheese with French toast, fries, and a Coca-Cola. Their breakfast menu is exceptional and perfect for satisfying our appetites.
Afterwards, we’d head to Malcolm X Park in DC to soak in the vibrant atmosphere with drumming and tribal dancing. For a sweet treat, we’d grab some ice cream on U Street. In the evening, we’d catch a comedy show at HotBed, a fantastic local venue where talented comedians perform. To wrap up the day, we’d take a leisurely stroll around the Lincoln Memorial. That would be the perfect end to an amazing day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When it comes to inspiration, I look up to artists like 2Pac, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, and Notorious B.I.G., as well as Nas. They have all shaped my understanding of music and storytelling. On a personal level, growing up in Glenarden, my community played a significant role in my development. My brother Bino, long live JR, and my friend Joe were pivotal influences.
My mother fostered an environment that was open and supportive of my creativity, and my uncle was instrumental when I first started making music. Additionally, local artists like Shatiff, Taz Mulah, and Ynot, who I grew up listening to, have also been a source of inspiration.
