We had the good fortune of connecting with Khadija Fox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Khadija, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It has always been important to me to have the ability to provide for myself ever since I was a little girl. I was taught at a young age that if you want nice things in life that it takes hard work and dedication to achieve those goals. As I have lived life and grown to have actual passions in life, having nice things no longer leads me in my desire to start my businesses. I started to realize that behind every talent I possess, I have a natural gift of service for my family and community. The even better understanding turned out to be that… I am a very multi-talented and caring person, thankfully. I do not only want to live in this world, I want to make a positive impact as well. I have started many successful businesses in my life but my most recent business is my biggest passion l, which is my role as a Birth Worker in the Birth and Maternal World. My thought process as a mother myself is compassion because I know what its like to go through pregnancy, labor and postpartum and feel very lost in the whole process. My mental health took a very big hit and I became very complacent in this experience and believed that it was normal. I have now learned that this is far from the truth.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

My business is Divine Maternal Services. I stand by highlighting the divine beauty and power of motherhood. I ignite a glorious light in our mothers by showing them that they are more than capable of being the best mothers ever by simply being the best version of themselves, through the alignment and evolution of the mind, body and spirit. I believe through experience, that this Divinity in Maternity births a wholeness for our mothers and everyone they come in contact with. Each service I provide is served with intentions to empower. Which is why I say, “You are beautifully one of a kind Mama! Simply Divine!”

When I was spiritually lead to start my journey as a Doula and one day a Midwife back in 2018, I was the only Black Doula that I could find locally in my city, which created a passion in me to learn what I needed to learn on my own through trial and error so that I could succeed and be the best Doula I could be. Gratefully I found a community fellow black birth workers in my city and gain more support on my journey. Since then I have certified as a Lactation Education Specialist, Full Spectrum Doula, Placenta Encapsulation Specialist, Prenatal Yogi, Hypno Birth Therapist and Yoni Steam Specialist. I have also been trained as a Traditional Home Birth Support Minister and started my own Holistic birth worker training and mentorship certification course.

As a holistic Doula I support mothers intensely no matter where or how they decide to give birth. The goal is to get rid of the fear and trauma that most mothers have experienced before and during doing something so natural to the body as giving birth. “I was terrified of pregnancy and birth, having Khadija’s support was a game changer. I felt so much more confident going into labor after meeting with Khadija to create a birth plan and strategies to manage labor and birth. She is so non-judgmental and understanding and supported my plans. She then helped me when my plans changed during labor. She was the first person I reached out to when labor started..” Says one client that I have coached and supported. I pride myself on creating these types of experiences for every mother that I empower.

Giving birth is truly a super power, unfortunately this power has been stripped away from many mothers and replaced with extreme trauma and in a lot of cases death. As a black woman learning more about the obstetric world behind the scenes, where our mothers often don’t get the chance to know the truth about our birth experiences. I learned that my children and I experienced birth neglect and abuse and was convinced that it was normal. This open a rabbit hole that showed me the statistics of the Maternal Mortality Rates of Black women specifically in America. 30-40% of black women are dying while giving birth in American hospitals due to preventable reasons like implicit bias, their pain being ignored, or their voices simply not being respected. Black infants are dying two times more that white infants at birth or before they turn one. This is not even mentioning the many black mothers who survived and are left with extreme trauma and horrible birth experiences. This is unacceptable. “My first 2 births were c sections and I didn’t think that a vaginal delivery was possible for me let alone a natural one. Thanks to the most amazing doula ever I was able to have a natural birth without trauma and my husband was empowered to advocate for me. Khadija stood up for me and helped me stand up for myself as well as bring a beautiful life into this world.” Says a VBAC client that I coached and supported. Having a doula is a privilege that a lot of our mothers don’t have access to so it is a huge part of my mission to serve black mothers and give them better chances to have the best birth outcomes ever, every time.

As a traditional home birth support minister I use all of my knowledge and skills to support a mother at home as she gives birth on her own. This experience is a traditional and cultural ceremony for our mothers, just as our ancestors experienced in the past. This ceremony is also know as a “Free Birth.” “I am so grateful to have found Khadija after months of searching. I experienced an amazing 1st home birth and 1st lotus birth and I can attribute that to her expertise. I have learned so much from Khadija and working with her was so wonderful! This was my third delivery and I can honestly say it was the best delivery I had ever experienced. After having a home birth I will never have another hospital birth and I will definitely come back to Khadija! She made me feel more like family rather than just a client.” Says a home birth client. I am blessed to work along side a village of fellow doulas and midwives to support home birthing mothers.

I am honored to say that I have recently started a training and mentorship for other holistic doulas in the art of birth work. My hopes are that more of our mothers will have access to us in order to combat these extremely unnecessary death rates as well creating an over all more pleasant birth experience. My course is a 9 week certification course hosted online and in person. I train them with all the information they need to be the best doula possible for their clients and I mentor them in the functioning of their business as well as hands on support for their clients.

All of my roles in my doula business are so impactful to my spirit, family and community. I truly believe that through better pregnancy and birth experiences we can have birth a better future for the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from the Stockton Ca area. Some of my favorite places to visit for me personally in this small town are the Movie Theater in Downton Stockton, followed by a nice sushi bar called Misaki right next door. For me these are some of the best spots in city to visit for a good and enjoyable time. There is a nice outside area to kind of hang out as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I would like to give a shoutout to Tamesha Turner and Ericka Dorsey, founders of Flourishing Families Inc. Thank you so much for your love, support and encouragement that greatly assisted me during my birth worker journey. I am forever grateful for you both and our whole Stockton cohort!
