Meet Khoa Nguyen | Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Khoa Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khoa, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in the bustling capital city of Vietnam, surrounded by a rich blend of culture and tradition. While deeply immersed in the Eastern way of living and social norms, my parents, especially my mother, raised me with a less traditional approach. Their guidance not only shaped my beliefs but also influenced how I approach my work.
My mom was both diligent and caring, instilling in me a strong sense of discipline from an early age. She ensured I followed routines, from academics to simple daily tasks, teaching me the value of structure and consistency. Looking back, her influence has profoundly shaped my desire for intentionality and coherence in my work. I strive to ensure that everything I create feels purposeful and aligned with the story I want to tell.
As a child, I was captivated by the vibrant culture around me, spending countless hours watching Japanese Power Rangers shows and reading stacks of Doraemon manga. Those moments of joy and wonder have stayed with me, often finding their way into my illustrations. Today, I constantly draw from those happy memories, seeking to capture that sense of fun, nostalgia, and playfulness in the art I create

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is rooted in simple, pleasant joy, drawing deeply from the vibrant memories of my childhood. This is why I strive to keep my art relatable and light-hearted. I believe there’s a quirky, comedic side to everything that can be universally appreciated. Childhood is filled with moments of discovery and joy, and I aim to evoke that feeling in my work—playful, ideal, and uplifting.
Bright, prismatic colors are central to my artistic identity, reminiscent of the bold schemes of superheroes and the cheerful hues of childhood toys. These colors carry an energy and purity that instantly evoke a sense of optimism and playfulness. They shaped my appreciation for vibrant tones and the emotions they can convey, and I strive to incorporate them into every piece I create.
I want to approach my work with a strong sense of control and intention, understanding how arrangement contributes significantly to the tone. I carefully consider composition and ensure every detail aligns with the feelings I want to evoke. Even when the subject matter isn’t inherently upbeat, I use exaggeration and stylistic choices to bring out a sense of joy and hopefulness. It’s about balancing a childlike wonder with thoughtful execution, allowing my art to resonate with others while staying true to my creative principles.
Throughout my journey, I’ve realized that clarity of purpose and staying true to my vision are the most fundamental. Ultimately, my goal is to create work that feels like a burst of childhood joy—a mix of nostalgia and energy that uplifts and inspires. Through my art, I hope to spark that same sense of wonder and optimism that bright, bold colors once brought me as a child.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friends were visiting, I’d take them on a week-long trip through Vietnam, a place that has shaped so much of who I am. We’d start in Hanoi and drive down to Da Nang, taking the scenic route through the countryside. I’d recommend they pack light—this trip is all about embracing simplicity and soaking in the beauty of the journey.
Along the way, we’d stop in small towns to enjoy delicious street food, explore local markets, and visit cozy cafes for a coffee or tea break. The trip wouldn’t be about hitting tourist hotspots but about finding quiet, less-crowded places where we could sit, relax, and talk while taking in the surroundings. Of course, a good playlist would be essential for the drive, adding to the joy of traveling through Vietnam’s lush landscapes and vibrant towns.
To me, the most fun and meaningful experiences come from these simple moments—sharing great food, connecting with people, and enjoying the natural beauty of the countryside. It’s a trip that highlights the heart of Vietnam: its warmth, charm, and ability to create memories that feel both comforting and unforgettable.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many wonderful people I want to thank, and I could easily go on much longer than time allows. I especially want to express my gratitude to Casey Nelson, the chair of illustration at SCAD, whose guidance has been instrumental in shaping my creative journey. I’m also incredibly thankful for my friend Evian Le, who has been a constant source of support and encouragement as I’ve built my career. Their influence and belief in me have made a lasting impact, and I’m so grateful to have them in my corner.
