We had the good fortune of connecting with Ki and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ki, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As careful as I am with my decisions, every step I take may be viewed as taking risks. Making a living and name for yourself in a city like Los Angeles comes with managing risks and learning when to take them. 8 years ago, I took the biggest risk to leave college behind to chase my dreams and goals. It’s also about perspective. I used to be outcome driven and I’m sure you could argue that I still am. But in terms of micro, I try not to let outcomes and expectations dictate my decisions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a singer songwriter and producer. I’m not sure what sets me apart. Somedays I feel alone, somedays I feel as if I’m no different than anyone. I’m not sure how I got here but I’m certain as to why. I want to be here everyday doing what I love to do. Can’t say any of this is easy either, I hold much respect for artists and musicians who dedicate their lives to a craft and to call it easy would be cavalier of me. I’m learning how to overcome my hurdles and I’m in the thick of navigating through obstacles myself and I’ve realized that being consistent to certain capacities has served me well. I’m finally listening for once in my life and our world can use a bit more of that right now.

I hope my music can capture a moment or feeling for my listeners to enjoy and resort to whenever they desire.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Gotta hit Top Restaurant in Pasadena for sure. Their fried chicken and Indonesian fried noodles are to die for. Guisados is another staple for me. Everything is braised there so its a great change up from also delicious street style tacos. I’m a big sushi guy as well and my favorite for years has been Komasa in Little Tokyo. I really appreciate their simplicity and authenticity. I cook most of my Korean food at home but I used to love, love, love Kim’s Place in Glendale. Since the pandemic they’ve sold their restaurant and I haven’t been back in years. I don’t think I have the courage. We’d definitely hit Baekjong for some Korean bbq. Great quality meats and sides. Their K-town location is great but I go to their Temple City location because its less crowded. Not a big drinker but you might find us at Katana in West Hollywood for some drinks and sushi as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I have to credit my family for their support. My parents migrated from South Korea in 1999 and Im grateful for all they’ve done for me. Being immigrants and raising children in a new country isn’t the easiest task to accomplish so my mission is always dedicated to my family and culture. Without them I don’t see myself being who I am today. Also have to give credit to everyone in my community and everyone who has taught me anything.
