We had the good fortune of connecting with Kia Nichelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kia, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I love this question. My work, life balance has changed tremendously! I remember when I would take my first client at 8am and sometime I wouldn’t leave the shop until 1am (if not later). The grind is definitely real, BUT self care is essential! The goal is to work smarter, not harder. I realized that when I decided to sale my own products. Within the first 3 days of releasing my first hot tool (The Hairmisses 5in1 Wands) I made 10k! That may not seem like much now, but then (20 years old), that was a lot of money to make sitting at home! It changed my outlook on my schedule because I thought “Wow, I can really make alot of money in my sleep, and now I can actually get some sleep!” I was finally able to have a social life, spend more time with God, dig deep into my spiritual life, properly nurture relationships, eat better, exercise, the list goes on! It feels good, it makes me happy! Now I won’t compromise that for money, because those thing are truly priceless.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Im very hands on with my business. I talk to my customers, I try make them feel good about shopping with me. I appreciate everyone who purchases from me, it makes me feel like they believe in my brand and I. And I think that’s what set me apart, from others. Im most proud of my store, having a physical location isn’t easy. Managing your store, training employees, meeting financial goals, inventory, and so much more. Not to mention managing your own home. Its alot, but here we are, 5 years later, and I’m telling this story. I guess it’s all worth it (lol). I got to where I am professionally by praying for an increase of patience and wisdom. It wasn’t easy but with effort and practice, it’s doable.

Lessons I’ve learned along the way are : be patient, nothing happens for no reason, and control your emotions.

I want the world to know, we all go through trials and tribulations but those things don’t define us, those are things that help push us into our purpose. I hope that watching me walk in my purpose inspires everyone to do the same.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a fun question! I love to do cute, chill stuff! So we would go get breakfast at Fratelli Cafe on Melrose, then we would do a little shopping, after we shopped we would grab a few sweets from Magnolia Bakery (I love desserts). We would get our nails done and get ready for dinner later! For dinner we would go to Mastro’s. I hate for the night to end so early, so I would suggest we went to Nobu for drinks!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love dedicate this to everyone around me. All of my friends and family encourage me to continue to move forward and be the best I can be. Everyone is super supportive. It’s impossible to stay stagnant when the energy is so positive!
