We had the good fortune of connecting with Kieran Hellum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kieran, how do you think about risk?
I’m a firm believer that without risk there is no reward. Starting a career in music with zero industry connections and zero experience in music was a risk but through that risk I have enjoyed the rewards of so much organic growth in my skills and also my fanbase and also my point of view for what’s possible. Taking this risk into such an uncertain path has been such an amazing opportunity to connect with people in a way I didn’t see possible a few years ago.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I express my art through music and sound. I feel that there is so much potential to move people through music and I want to help change peoples lives through music much like how my life was changed. I try to be completely honest with my work and just express what I’m feeling in that current time because it helps me to process exactly what I’m experiencing in that moment. It definitely wasn’t the easiest journey to get to where I’m currently at in music and I don’t think it should be an easy journey because that difficulty is what makes me appreciate it. An important lesson I had to teach myself is the importance of not caring what people think about you and not comparing your work to other people. I’m sure this is a lesson most people probably need to be hearing as well. Music is so subjective and it’s just as much art as any painting is. There is no such thing as art that’s better than other art so as long as what your creating feels honest and beautiful to you than your successful.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up for the first part of my childhood in a little suburb outside of Hollywood called Burbank. Some of my favorite spots down there to eat are definitely Porto’s bakery (best orange juice of your life), paquito Mas, and Acai jungle. I would definitely visit the observatory, and the back of the Hollywood sign, and Malibu beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my parents. Usually when a kid talks about pursuing a career in music it can tend to scare parents away because of how much risk is involved and how little it pays off often. My parents believed in me since day 1 and have supported in whatever ways they have been able to and that is truly all the support you need. My dad was actually the one to buy me my first microphone off Amazon that I used along with my iPhone to record my first album. This album is what sparked my obsession with music.
